Gas going back down

But certianly not substainable energy, from a novelty solar panel that took more energy to produce than it will ever produce.
False

Who can afford to buy solar panels? Certainly not enough to power a vehicle.
Depends on what EV you drive and how far you drive it.

DW has a 70 mile round trip commute. The Leaf uses about 20 kWh for that trip in the summer, 25-30 in the coldest part of winter.

Lots of people drive a much shorter distance and don't live where it goes significantly below 0°F in the winter. At the off peak rate we pay for the EV charger the 30 kWh cost is about $3.93 or $0.056 per mile. In the summer it is $2.64 or $0.037/mile.

Calculate the cost per mile of whatever you are driving even when gas was $3. At $3/gallon with a 25 MPG vehicle the cost is $0.12/mile. At $4/gallon it is $0.16/mile. At $5/gallon it is $0.20/mile.

I guess that would also depend on where you live. In Cali the sun is always shining. In London it's always raining.
