If everyone got it at the same time, it would be like China where business had to shut down. No workers, economy dropped...makeshift hospitals. Here there are 2 beds per 1000 people. If 60% get sick, 30% needing medical care, which is statics I have seen.... Medical care will be overwhelmed....lots more will die than just the elderly and underlying conditions.
If it is spread out there is a better chance that medical care will not be overwhelmed

Remember, every time you talk about COVID-19 being not very serious because it only effects certain people, anyone you know who has a disability or is elderly or otherwise in an at risk group is hearing that you don't think their deaths are very serious. Anyone with loved ones in those groups is hearing you don't think their loved ones deaths are very serious.

I'm young and yet I am at-risk for pneumonia because I've had it twice before and need to monitor myself in cold/flu season. My sister has no immune system due to RA medication and is 35. One of my closest friends is 29 and is pre-diabetic with thyroid issues and like me is in an at-risk group. My father is 70. One of my oldest friends in my dnd group is battling cancer right now. My partners parents are both in their late 50's.

We're listening when you say those at-risk people aren't something we should be worried about, and we should just expect deaths in their demographics.

thank you for posting this. My husband and I are both immuno suppressed and over 60. I have serum negative RA, Take Prolia for severe osteo, for starts. I also have a heart condition and use steroids.

If I was young and healthy, I wouldn't be nearly as worried and cautious as I am about this, and it's hard to put yourself in 'my' shoes when you are 25 and healthy. But then, I've been battling health problems since I was 23 so I've always been aware of having to 'be careful' during cold and flu season.

I seriously think that why the bells and alarms are going off about the Covid 19 virus is because of it's ease of transmission.

I've been masking while going out most of the winter. I'm starting to think of ways to be fashionably masked....color coordinated...flashy....stylish. May as well have some fun with it. Sounds like I'll be wearing them much of the spring.

Spain is about to go into lockdown. The infection rate has grown exponentially over the last 48 hours.
I’m not in favour of this method of attempting to control the spread of the virus. One of the reasons I’m not in favour is the economic damage. There have been promises of state financial assistance and they may well prove true for some of the larger companies. The smaller companies and the self employed are likely to find times very hard.
Tourism is the major generator of income for Barcelona and I can’t see people wanting to come here for holidays for quite some time. Add to this the ongoing problems between the Catalan separatist movement and Madrid and I cant see the lockdown working out for the best for the ordinary people.

It is a complicated problem. It’s not that the government cares about the death rate; ordinary flue kills a higher proportion of the most vulnerable to these types of viral infections. If one got infected on Monday and died on Tuesday there wouldn’t be so much of a problem. The problem is, people who do need medical aid take up resources for a couple of weeks or more and, as many doctors admit, by the time the patient has got to that stage with the virus they’re unlikely to recover. Factor up the care costs in a pandemic of this nature, you’re spending millions.

It seems from the statistics so far that for most they will have a week to ten days of flu like symptoms and recover. The prevalent view seems to be a couple of weeks of restrictions will sort the problem out.
I think it’s going to take months.

So, could it be wiser to let the virus run. The doctors believe the high mortality will be in the elderly and sick. Yes it is sad on a personal level if an elderly relative dies but they’re going to die of something.

I’ll point out here that I’m 65, with a heart to lung artery proble, so I’m high risk.

On the positive side, I come into contact with a tiny amount of other humans compared to most. If I can get food for me and the animals quickly without going into crowded enclosed spaces I’m in with a good shout.

I was looking forward to seeing my daughter and her husband next month.
No I'm not worried whether or not I can buy tiolet paper and disinfectant.

My whole household is high risk as well.
Severe asthma, diabetes, among other lifelong issues.

Doing our best to do the not dying thing.

Self isolating as much as we can. Washing hands even more often and being mindful of keeping our distance if we must be out and about.
