Hey can I get you guys to chime in on something?

I don’t have any of the paper n95 type masks, and I don’t have full confidence in the home made cloth ones, but I do have a proper respirator mask, (covers lower half of face), that I wear almost daily....I’m just a little shy to go out wearing that in public!

So my question is this: would it still be considered “cultural appropriation” at this time if I wrapped up in a scarf sort of thing to cover my mask and preserve my dignity?

Never was? I mean, it's a scarf. They exist everywhere. I always think it makes someone look like a babushka, personally. I even wear scarves wrapped over my head all the time in winter - it's warm and I don't like hats. Just don't wrap it to look like something very-very specific - like a turban - and nobody cares. If you do the full headscarf like I do you may get some people who assume you're muslim - it's happened all of once to me. I just tell them I'm not muslim, I'm just cold, and assumptions are bad.

Whose permission do you need to do what you think is appropriate in your circumstances?

Do what you feel you have to do.

Waching the news right now it's kinda nice the US is coming together ❤
Distilleries many small one's across the US have taken upon themselves to pump out sanitizer, auto manufacturers have takin it upon themselves to start making ventilators, Ford and GM, Tesla I forget how many they said they were making, and masks. Haynes is going to start pumping out masks, 3M also.
We'll get through this.

I think they were more looking to try to find a way to respect other cultures/faiths/traditions while still feeling good about themselves. :)

Less "permission" more "respect".

But, in this case it's a scarf. Nobody I know would ever care. :p

I see someone else is watching. 😁

Weeeelllllll, people are pretty sensitive about stuff these days, and my town is....very white.

Oh, that makes sense. The one person who did approach me was also white, but not aggressive. No Muslim I've ever met would care about "appropriation" of scarves that keep your head warm. It's not like it's a native american headdress or something - it's a scarf. I can't tell you how a really insular community that doesn't care for Muslims would react - my city is relatively diverse. Frankly, though, if you're pale as sour cream with shiny blue eyes and blonde hair like me you're much less likely to run into problems. If you're a little darker it may be more of an issue.
(This is exactly what I mean by saying some human lives are inherently political. Just wanting to wear a scarf changes based on politics.)

Personally I would just wear whatever made me happy - mask or scarf - and not care and scold people who make assumptions. Plenty of people where I live were wearing masks and/or scarves out to the grocery last week. But the masks don't do much anyhow. Better to leave them for more important scenarios unless you're sick.
