Could your family weather a depression?

You know,, hubby told me not to worry today. He said I got chickens and a house full of herbs. We'll just have eggs in MANY different fashions to get us through!

I've been working on becoming more 'self sustaining' this year, but as up until May we living in an apartment its been quite a bit of work and money getting things rolling here. I won't have a good veggi/fruit garden going until next year being the season is over. It makes me worry... I've been getting more worried as each day passes.

My husband's father was the first to be laid off today... so its hitting our family whether hubby gets laid off friday or not. We're just going to hang out at home and do nothing for awhile. Just work on our free stuff and keep our minds off of the outside world.

I have also been thinking along these lines except the goats ( my dh said no to goats already). The main thing people need is faith and to believe in something bigger than this world.

first you need to live,, then you can have faith,, god never said sit there and let me take care of ya, and he didnt say if you have faith, sitting there waiting will feed your family,, he's taught us to be ready, and to survive,,, now is the time to show him that we can use the brains he gave us,, and make him proud.
i know i sound "harsh" sometimes,,, but im a christian,( dont believe in church's) and have faith, and believe in miracles ( im a walking one),, but ,, i dont think "faith" is all you need,, you need to use ya head,,,,,, i just hope he will make it so we can help the kids that have parents that dont think even a day ahead

I know this is a little aside the topic, but it is something that I feel I need to correct. "In God We Trust" is on every U.S. coin. The mint does not have the authority to randomly take it off. This is an act of congress. The motto was moved to the rim along with the date and "E Pluribus Unum".
I find the coins very handy myself and are sturdier than a bill that can get torn, washed, burned, etc. They really don't weigh that much. Once TPTB get their act together and get rid of the ragbuck, you will have to become use to using these anyway.

I do believe in God and wish to teach my children how important it is to be spiritual but I do not attend church. My garden and my community is my church and in this great and beautiful place we live in I find religion.

I would never tell anyone what to believe in or that they are wrong. Whatever gives us peace....and savin for a rainy day gives me peace right now.

Watchin the news and listening to the woes of my community has triggered my urge!

coins and paper money aint gonna be worth anything too much longer,,, unless their silver or gold,, but then their only worth the amount of metal in them,, not their face value.

and i think that god would hate to have anything about him on money,,,,money is NOTHING to him,its a man made thing,,, but i bet he'd love us to put it on our chickens we sell,,, hehe

I agree with you on the first part of your statement more than you could guess ( http://goldismoney.info/forums/index.php ). You might enjoy this forum. I do not agree entirely with you on the second part though. A country's public declaration of belief in God pleases Him. The Bible makes this clear. I do not think God has any problem with the use of money. It is just a medium of exchange like anything can be. The "love of money" on the other hand is a different story. Why do you think America has been so blessed and prospurous over the last 200 years. It's the last 30-40 years that this nation has not seen his blessing and that coincides with the ever increasing decline in morals, belief in God, and wanting all mention of Him removed from anything public.

thanks for the link

and i just think that god didnt even know what money was or is,, tithes NOW mean money,, but in "the days" it meant food , i feel money is an evil entity,, it is used to show "what we're worth", not for commodities,,,,,BUT ,, we all need it,, for now,, it wont be like that in another year .
is funny,, last night i was flippin through channels,, and see that dude that always giving advice on the stock market,,, last week it was " dont worry, buy this,, sell this",, last night it was,,,,"BUY GOLD" hahaha
lol.png

now he pose to be "smart",, i just laughed at him and told him that he aint even smarter then an old hippie like me,,, ive been buying gold for a few years hehe

I'm sorry to hear about all of our members suffering job losses at this time. I hope you all have enough to sustain you and folks you can count on as well.

I did want to address something, from one of those city folks you guys are afraid of coming in to take over.

Some of us do have sustaining lifestyles and many of us garden and can as well.

However, there's something you may not be considering. I study my family history, so I know exactly what my folks did to survive the Great Depression. My maternal grandmother was a single working gal when the Depression hit. Her mother died a couple of weeks before the stock market crash of '29. My grandmother owned a house and had a career and none of that changed during the Depression (though she did get married a few years into the Depression). Why? Because the economic woes that hit the country didn't fall as heavily in the city (L.A.) where she was living. Why? Because the economy was based on much more than a few large employers who laid off and sent shockwaves throughout the entire community.

My dad's side was a different story. They lived in a small rural community in Illinois and jobs were heavily affected by the Depression. What did they do? They packed up and took Route 66 all the way to Los Angeles where there were plenty of jobs to be had. They survived and they prospered because they went where the jobs were.

So, it may be that you don't need to worry about us as much as WE need to worry about YOU!

Most of my friends have Depression safe jobs - teachers, firemen, policemen, small company owners with plenty of clients, etc. The CHP cars are driving our freeways with "Now hiring" bumper stickers on the back.

Will many of these folks need to cut back? Absolutely. Will some of them lose their homes? Certainly - IF they bought more than they could afford with these lousy loans. And, of course, anyone who has been spending more than they take in will have a harder time when times get lean. A big question is how folks will deal with it. Will they hoard and keep for themselves or will they do like many did back in the 1930s and struggle through together and help one another for the common good? That has yet to be seen.

im almost positive that we said the city folk that wasnt ready,,, not ALL city folk,,,,im NOW a city folk,, and have no worries,,, but noone can say that the "bad part of town" people will be ready,, or the druggies, or the thiefs,,or many more. YES we need to worry bout "city folk" just like we need to worry bout "hick town" folks,,,,,,,and THIS depression is NOTHING like the old 1. there wont be jobs that count on gas, oil, MONEY ,, around. in the old depression, our money was still worth something, there just wasnt alot of it,,,, this time,, our money isnt gonna be worth the ink and paper its on.

Thanks for your post backyard buddies

My husband still has his job and we are doing ok, but we have overspent in the years past, and we're feeling it now. We have been changing though, and are trying to get things in order.

My mom keeps saying we are heading for a depression, and I am trying to listen to her. We are setting up a room in her house to put away staples now, so that we won't have to keep paying increasing prices. When my husband and I need some rice, for example, we can buy it back from her at the today's price.

I'm also trying to weed out things we have but don't need. There are people who will pay for my daughter's gently used shoes and clothing, and furniture that we don't need. There is really no need to keep these things around when the money could be feeding us.
