Could your family weather a depression?

Well, since I started this post..... I have managed to get 6 fig trees started. I am constantly looking for more fruit trees & vines. I have purchased different veggie seed and will be getting more.
Have you added anything?

I have been swapping seeds, I have my seeds for next year but swapped flower and extra white radish seeds for more vegetables and herbs.
I also just bought a plum tree (I had bought one in the spring but it didnt leaf out), and a couple more Nanking Cherries. I already have one crab apple, one Red Rome Beauty apple tree and one Honey Crisp apple tree that I bought in the spring. I have an English Walnut I bought then too but dont know if it will do anything, I am keeping my fingers crossed.
I have lilacs but any other bushes I grow I want to make sure they are fruiting. Maybe quince.

I've been collecting seeds and swapping and selling. I've tried to get enough for some fruit trees, but unable to as of now.

Sadly, my husband did finally lose his job on Friday. We have to find other means of income as unemployment will just cover and bills and the mortgage. There will be nothing left for food or otherwise.

Luckily, he does have side work. Jobs that will bring in a few hundred extra... plus I have my little home business.

I'm just hoping to weather the winter so we can better care for ourselves in the spring and summer when the chickens are laying more, and my veggie garden will be growing strong.

We've ordered another 12 chicks. DH has built another two chicken tractors. I planted an indoor herb garden.

We're also rounding up MIL's old "manual" tools. So far we have a two person lumber saw, drill and scythe. I bought a sewing machine but I don't know how to sew. Guess I'll learn fast!

I'd love to start planting fruits and berries, but I recently moved to zone 4 and must research what will survive here. Nursery stock is sooo expensive. I may go to my past home (2 homes ago, zone 5) and request some raspberry canes. Would that be rude? When I moved here there were 30 blueberry bushes along the driveway, not doing well. Heavy snow here. As much as 11 feet in a month. Pounds the shrubs down. Suppose I could build supports. Anyone have ideas for snow country fruit? Sounds like a name for a future fruit stand.

We have planted two apple trees. They are supposed to grow here in Florida we will see. DH also just purchased two more piglets. The other two are ready to go to the butchers we just have to find a place to take them as its hunting season here and there is a wait. I also have my seeds for next year. Wanted to plant a winter garden but DH put the piglets in my garden area. I also have quite alot of veggies in the freezer and canned I hope to do more canning.

You know I dont have alot of land just about 2 acres but I am lucky enough to have my chickens a large garden 5 apple trees and a plum tree. My mom lives just up the road she too has a massive garden and grandma is just beyond her with her huge garden. We are always swapping back and forth especially for my eggs which is great! My dad is a huge hunter and thank god for that he. He has just got a 400 lb elk which will feed all of us for quite some time, and not to mention the antelope and the salmon he has caught. Wild game is not my favorite but with groceries up so high and gas thats insane it helps ALOT!
I have always started using this organization called Angel Food Ministries to get food too. They dont go by your income and they are in most states now with more and more coming all the time. It's a great thing to check into I know this months menu included:
ribeye steaks, chicken breasts, meatloaf and gravy, chicken strips, porkchops. meatballs, hotdogs, carrots, california blend veggies, pasta, marinara sauce, hawaiian punch, milk, tortillas, eggs, and a dessert item and all this is only 30.00 try to buy all this at the grocery for this price you wont get it thats for sure. All of it top quality food right from the distribution centers. Mom had found this womans day and we have been using it since.
My husbands plant was officailly closed this July and thanks to Bush they sent the company to Mexico which is so sad, unemployment doesnt go that far and their severance package sucked and not to mention having to without insurance. I am just thankful he found another job!
