Could your family weather a depression?

the biggest thing in preparing, is you friends,, i cant believe ( myself included) are not "comming together", if i had 50 acres, i would want 3 or 4 families on that property with me,, just for when " dad hurt himself, and mom cant make the horses work" . but stupid me has an acre at the edge of the city, ( 1 acre lot here is alot lol ) but am thinking about "joining" another family ( really good friends of mine) in maine, they are having problems with $ , and they have 4 kids and are struggling. but i see it as, im helping them now, so they can help me later,,ehhe

We're prepared for those 90 people. At both homes. This is so true. You have to be prepared to defend you and yours when TSHTF. And I really think it will, someday.....

Edited to add: I am not a doomsdayer by any means, I don't believe any of that garbage about the world ending (even with those scientists over in Europe playing around with particles!). I do believe society can break down, however, if the economy gets bad enough. That's what I'm/we're preparing for.

Homemade laundry detergent. This fills a 200 ounce detergent bottle. Please read all instructions before making.

What you Need:
1/3 Bar ZOTE soap (you can get this on the spanish isle at Dollar General for $1 a bar and you get 3 helpings from it)
1/2 cup 20 Mule Team Borax (you can get this at you local grocer for about $3 in the cleaners isle)
1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (this should be near the Borax for about $3)
3 Quarts of boiling water (you will also need 5 more quarts of boiling water)
Big "old" pot

Directions:
Put 3 quarts of water in the pot and bring to a boil. Grate soap into the water and stir until melted. Add Borax and stir until dissolved and then add the washing soda and stir until dissolved. Cook for about 1 hour until it begins to resemble honey (it will stay pink). Put 1 quart of boiling water in a 5 gallon bucket and then add the mixture and mix well. Add 4 more quarts of boiling water and mix well. Let stand for 12 hours before using. Let cool for a couple of hours and then you can use the top of a milk jug for a funnel and fill your detergent bottle. Pour slowly. When it is set it will resemble chicken fat, but don;t be concerned, you can put some in a small pot and heat it up slowly on the stove top and bring it back to a liquid. This is what I do because I have a front load washer and it works well for me. Use 1/2 to 3/4 cup per load.

If you would like to have a scent, just add about 10 drops of any essential oil that you may have.

This is a low sudsing detergent which is great because it helps lengthen the life of your washer.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOUR FAMILY WITH SAVING A LITTLE IN FINANCES

,, are safe,, there are very bad people who will have nothing ( and some good people driven to be bad) but will do ANYTHING to "have"

I do think that most people are better off in the country, and be in a better condition to survive. Most of us up here (born and raised) have been around guns all their lives, so we can at least hunt.
I havent bought new clothes (except undies and socks) in ten years. I LOVE goodwill and st. vincent de paul.
I do not think it is about living in fear...I think it is about living WITH OUT constant worry. At least I know we can survive here. We have a pretty close knit comunity (thank god) we all look out for one another.
I agree with Reinbeau' s piece.

Could we survive a depression as we are right now? Probably not, but we're working our way to that. We save our money like crazy, and our only debt in the world is our mortgage, which unfortunately won't be paid off for many years still. We have our few chickens, and a big garden. I just learned to can this year (thanks to many BYCers!) and we'll keep going to do as much as we can with our 1.75 acres! the1much post about coming together reminds me of a great movie I saw several months ago (free streaming on NetFlix) called "Our Daily Bread" an oldie from 1934, about people surviving the Great Depression. Sure, it's Hollywood, but I'm guessing that if you're reading this thread, you're much like I am and will get sucked right into the movie! His idea really makes sense to me. I think working together is probably the wisest way to survive any kind of depression, collapse, whatever.

Somehow I doubt that preparing for the end of the world will make much difference. the end of the world is the end of the world, am I right?

We're so far awy from anything resembling the "Great Depression" right now. The economy might be tough, tight, or downright bad...but only by American standards.
