Msbear I agree, families /individuals as well, need to get back to the basics and be more self-reliant. Those you have not learned yet needs to. If more folks could do this you would probably see more small country/feed stores make a comeback as well. Which will help with the gas problems of an expensive trip for us country folk to town. More work is harder on the back, but good for heart. My grandpa had a 'lil' country store with a gas station when I was small barely remember it but what I do remember fills my heart with joy. Oh, I love the Lord and He has filled my heart with a love for others and of simple things here. I love working on our small farm "in progress" with my family a lot of hard work , but a lot of laughs, talking of memories, things to come, our Heavenly Father, gardening, seems to keep you close together. No one knows what is to come, but I know where I am going. God Bless!

The source was on Discovery channel - or TLC. NOT the other one, ya know, the episode of Star trek LOL. Morelcabin, I couldnt agree more. I am pretty sure we watched this just in January or Feb. this year.
For all of those who believe the earth will end in 2012 - no need to save, pay off bills, stockpile food supplies - cause hey the world's going to end. Why not just take all your money out of savings and go on one last big fling and live it up?
O.K. after sitting her for about 3 hours just reading through all 9 pages of this thread, that has really caught my attention, all I have to say really is.....Don't' worry about even buying gold because one day a piece of bread will buy a bag of gold.
Ruth put in all in one of those walnut or pecan shells you were talking about....if your ready spiritually...you don't have to worry, or for better terms, concern yourself with the world ending in 3 1/2 years cause your not going to be here to eat all that food you stored anyways and there isn't going to be any city slickers that haven't put away that is going to eat it either.
Don't get me wrong I am not going to sit here and say not to store up for hard times, because I have myself. My grandma told me as a youngster that when I started to can foods, start by canning a season ahead. Meaning, the first year you can, don't use it until you've canned the second year. I do this and it keeps us stocked year round.
I asked this on SS forum..........My only question with the "Could your family weather a depression?" question is this.....For those who have a mortgage payment, where will they live when the dollar hits bottom? Bank owners will want from you what is owed, right? If you can't get to work or have no work to go to....what then? You may have nice, loving neighbors now but will they be there to help when you are losing your house? You may have to go to where you know no one. What then?

I bought into mutual funds and the dollar cost averaging theory in the late 1980s. My funds tanked with 9/11 and have never recovered. I'm thinking about putting that IRA/mutual fund monthly payment somewhere else.
Wish I would have pulled my retirement investments last summer. I've lost a BUNCH of $$$s.
My mutual funds are worthless now. WAMU just became junk stocks and I had a bunch of that.
You are right, I don't want to be holding cash now either. We are looking for cheap land.
