Countdown To Eggs! For June hatches 😊

Pics
It really is tough to get egg colors right in pictures! The one I just posted looks a bit browner in that picture than it does in person, ugh!

Anyway, those eggs are suspiciously similar! 🤔
In the pics they do. In person the one I found yesterday is very very pale. Tequilas first egg (and up till she stopped) were much darker and no question on color (the most recent one just had a hint of color) as it had a lot of color.

After my EE, Tequila, spent the day running in and out of the coop and looking all over I didn't find another "new"egg... I ended up moving the stuff I put where I found the other egg. Don't want her not laying because she can't find a spot. Guess I see what tomorrow brings.

That looks like a pretty large egg for a bantam. It guess it’s something else. That’s based on my handful of bantam Cochins and Silkies I’ve had over the years. Their eggs were always very small.

That's why I'm confused, because no one with that egg color or size is acting like they're laying except for Athena, and that'd be an awfully big egg for her first... Gwenyth, the NN bantam, wouldn't surprise me if she laid something that size because she's a bit bigger, but she's not convincingly looking like an egg layer yet. I feel like if it's from a pullet it has to be from Freia, but she hasn't even really hinted that she's wanting to lay yet even though her comb and wattles are red and her vent does look widened. She is a Cochin bantam in name only, I'd guess only a few generations out from crossing in Orpington bantams to make Chocolate Cochins, but she's huge for a Cochin bantam and more the size of an Orp bantam. Hard to say. 🤔 I'll have to take a closer look at my birds when I go out to give them breakfast in a few minutes here.

Remember how yesterday I said my green speckled egg definitely wasn’t one of my Legbars? Guess who I saw making a nest in an empty corner then found the mystery green egg a little bit later? One of the “Legbars”.

It was then I remembered I also hatched a sexlinked backcross Olive egger female. Identical in every way to the Legbars. There was a minor mix up while banding but I was certain I figured it out in the end. Then that lone “Olive Egger” chick went missing at about 3 week old. When my kid got into the coop after dark (likely foxes).

I’m now thinking either I bungled the banding mixup way worse that I thought. Or it’s actually an accidental cross on the breeder’s end. I’ll wait till I’m 100% certain on the hen. Then reach out and see if she can help solve the mystery. Whatever happened this is a happy accident. I’d written off Olive eggers for the year. My egg basket much appreciates this unexpected gift.

Maybe you shouldn’t put too much weight on what I said. I can’t even keep my own birds straight! :lau (Read post #294).

What is up with these chickens keeping us guessing?!?! I have 3 mystery layers that are laying where my camera doesn't pick them up. I am moving my run cam inside to watch that spot till I figured it out.

Haha, no worries, it's the same for me--somehow I'm able to think more clearly when it's someone else's birds but my own confuse the heck out of me. 🤣

I didn't get any eggs yesterday, so I don't even have a clue on my mystery egg. :idunno Athena was up in the nests acting like she would lay, and Gwenyth checked out the nests as well, but nothing.

They just like to keep us guessing.

My camera is moved so I can now see who is laying in the hidden spot. I haven't had any more pale green eggs since I found that 1 on Fri. But my EE has been in and out of the coop "searching" for the past 2 days.

Another small mystery egg today... This one is smaller than the last one and was in the nest that Athena has been fussing over for a week and a half now. I'll have to butt-check her in the morning to confirm as it was too dark and she was out of reach tonight. :fl If not her, then it's possibly Gwenyth, who's not a June baby, but I won't complain--we're actually getting eggs again! :wee
