Coyotes--Where do they eat their kill?--Sad Update :(

I saw this thread and will share my story. It sounds like coyote attacks on cats is common but for one reason or another we think it won't happen to us. But it does happen and breaks our heart. My cat of 7 years has been spending most of his day time outside in our yard (for almost 2 years now). At night he goes in. We have 1 acre property fully fenced at minimum 6 ft high. Although we live near Los Angeles and an area with coyotes, I have never seen one on my property. After my cat went missing I was ble to piece what happened together with the help of a security camera. Looking at the picture captured I can see at 10 AM the coyote got in from under our front gate, last pic is of him approaching my cat who is standing on his hind legs right near my front door ( this is his fav spot since the door is clear glass and he can see me working from home). There are no other pics captured and despite being right there at that moment I didn't hear anything. After finding this pic I knew where to look, I traced the possible steps and was lead to a bush right next to the house. Had I stood during this time I would have seen it all happen. I found some fur near the bush, broken branches, my cats collar hanging from a branch inside the bush and dried brown blood all over the ground outside the bush. So obviously my sweet cat thought it would be a good idea to hide in a bush rather than run a little bit further and climb a tree. The coyote was very skinny so I'm sure getting into the bushes was no issue for it. Due to my distraught I couldn't manage to get the collar and left it there, with hope to feel better and get it the next day. To my dismay the collar was gone the next day, so I'm sure the coyote must have returned. Is it common for them to return to same spot?

A full grown coyote won't leave anything for the buzzards except some fur-filled scat. Trappers in Pennsylvania still get a decent price for pelts in that cold country. That might be why you haven't had problems with coyotes before. Ask around for local trappers who may come and solve the problem for you.

If they are what got to your cat, and the cat was near your house, any animal small enough for a coyote to kill, is now in danger. As long as coyotes are fearful of humans, you have a chance to have unmolested stock, dogs or cats. Once they overcome their fear of man, killing, trapping or otherwise dispatching them is going to be your only recourse.

Get a suppressor $600 bucks, have your .22 barrel threaded $100. Get a predator call $70, and avenge your cat quietly. Use subsonic ammo, and it will be quieter then when you shut your back door.

I'm so sorry to hear about everyones pets its never easy to lose loved ones, the only easy way to think about it is to know they're in a better place with lots of love for them.
I just lost one of my cats yesterday morning to a coyote. I've had lots of cats since I was very young but this one was very different the temperament she had was not thought of being possible from an animal, she would fetch small rubber balls never knew cats would do that until I had her, she was a snuggle bug for sure always laying with me or my toddlers, any time one of my kids would get hurt and cry she would come running to investigate and ensure everything is ok and was fearless she would chase and play with any friends dogs that they brought over even large breeds while she was a very small cat 6 lbs fat even though she was 8 years old everyone thought she was a kitten from her size. I can easily say she was my most favorite cat I've ever had and will truly be missed.

There was no evidence or noise but as I checked the perimeter I seen coyote tracks come into the yard and looking much closer there was a very small blood smear on leaves at there entrance to my property and with her not showing up at routine times I knew it was her.
I kinda like the idea right above this post might stop future problems, my other cat that is still with us is much bigger, stronger and faster but she has asthma, sneezes a lot and always sounds congested vet took xrays when she was kitten to determine asthma and that was the first time I've heard of a cat with it so I'm worried about her outside, she's actually the one I've always worried about because of how much noise she makes just walking through the yard.

R.I.P for everyone's pets

Well, one of my cats didn't come in last night. He's known to stay out the latest and venture out the farthest. He always comes in at night. I have been hearing coyotes just about every night. So, I'm worried. I've looked at my fields trying to find some sort of evidence, but nothing. So, it got me wondering when coyotes make a kill, where do they eat there kill? Do they drag it off or devour it there? Thanks for any help or advice.

Since man first chunked a rock at a coyote, coyotes have made a habit of eating their prey at a distance from where they killed it. Good luck. Or hopefully your cat is just Tom Catting around the neighborhood and he'll be back once he does what he wants to do..

Good Morning,
I might be the newest addition to this club I’m sad to say. It’s 4:15AM and I haven’t slept a wink as Keirnan has been missing for 40 hours.

I keep opening the backdoor thinking he’ll be there but he’s not. He has slept in the Dogaloo on a soft bed porch side on the several nights he hasn’t been in over the past 1.5 years. The situation is that we were out with friends and our kids, dog and other cat were inside. He wasn’t ready to come in they say, so out he stayed. Keirnan always hears the truck and comes running no matter what time of day/night. However, he didn’t this time so after making sure he wasn’t locked in any of the outbuildings we went to bed and I would get him at 6:00 when I woke up.

We have 3.5 fenced acres with woods, where I can hear coyotes, and have seen owls around the neighbors property. We believe in letting our animals do as they do, and I get this could be part of the circle of life, it just hurts though.

Those freaking coyotes were howling away last night and so I sat here and googled — which led me here. It’s been heart breaking to read everyone’s stories. I’m sorry for all your losses...

I got this cat at 5 weeks. He’s half feral Tuxie and half Siamese I’m told. My husband, who isn’t even a cat person fell in love with him...he has camped with us, loves hanging in the woods with us, loves heavy equipment and is a mans cat riding in the big truck! I feel sick thinking of his potential violent end.

...My feet are so cold without him curled up on the end of the bed...I hope I find him, I’ll be out looking in a couple hours. I pray my boys story doesn’t end here...

I came across this site as my cat Jack is missing. Its like he vanished one night. He was an indoor/outdoor but always stayed on our deck or property. I have never heard coyotes but have heard they are in the area. All I know is that we miss Jack terribly. He is nearly 14 years old and healthy. He loved to hunt. We found his collar laying in our driveway but no evidence of Jack. We did not hear anything either. It will be 2 weeks soon so I have given up hope of finding his face at our door. He is a tuxedo cat and had the sweetest personality. I do know if we should find him or if I should get another cat, it will never be let outside. I just cannot believe we cannot find a trace of him nowhere. We have posters out and have put the word out. We are in the suburbs about 45 minutes out of Atlanta, but our area does have some heavily wooded areas. Never heard coyotes but people say they exist in our area. I am so sorry for everyone's loss on this site.

That's my Tuxey above, she has been missing since last Sunday, May 28. She is our first outside cat, and we have only had cats in the family for about three years when I realized that my cat allergy was gone. Our daughter's boyfriend found her as a tiny hungry kitten outside his apartment. He was a bit overwhelmed at the way she cried out and followed him from room to room but then he soon realized what a delight she is. He even shared video of her fetching lightweight pompoms as if she were a puppy. He left for the Air Force and we took her to our newly acquired rural farm. She kept my husband company while our son and I stayed behind to finish the school year. Soon she owned the place, we really felt that she would be able to take care of herself outside, she came back with such regularity. We knew that she was a huntress, I took pity on several geckos that she was tormenting and she came into the house with a mouse in her mouth once.

Last Sunday she had slept in the house all day, into the evening, while we took our dogs for a swim in the pool. She must have slipped out when we brought the dogs in, neither of us remember letting her out, but that is not unusual. When she did not come back at bedtime, well, that had happened before too. But when she was not waiting to come in and eat a can of food Monday morning, that was unusual and worrisome.

Reading above, I am struck at how our love of our cats is so tactile. Tuxey is so silky/fuzzy, I call her my little Swiffer because she comes in with all manner of vegetation caught in her fur. Her body and limbs feel so taught and tiny under that fluffy fur, I am amazed at the way she seems driven to play and hunt outside in the forest around our home, she seems so small and dainty. Yet she races up a tree trunk to about ten feet and then right back down and seems the picture of joy out there.

I really thought the presence and scent of five dogs in and around our home would repel coyotes. There is still no evidence of what happened to Tuxey and our posters are still fresh out there. It hasn't been a week yet. But we have raptors and coyotes and raccoons and it is not at all like her not to come home. I have searched all places where she could have become trapped several times.

Tomorrow I plan to let our female german shepherd sniff the blanket that Tuxey slept on last Sunday before she went out and see if she heads in any particular direction. The shepherd has not been trained to hunt, but it's worth a try.

Everybody above, I am so sorry for your losses and I am grateful for your sharing. If something seems ungrammatical or awkward above, I went back and changed many verbs to the present tense because I am not ready to use the past tense about my Tuxey.

The Coyotes are ruthless. They just hop our fence (and mind you, it is a big and tall one!), sit there in the yard, and don't move until you pop a bullet it its direction. I'm seriously thinking of an electronic fence as we are thinking of moving out to the desert where the predators are REALLY hungry. In the meantime, invest in a good rifle if you don't already own one...or at least a BB...which I do try as a first line of defense. Sometimes you get timid predators...but I'm finding that it's a rare occurrence. These predators are starving with all the building and infrastructure populating their territory...they don't hold back one bit.

So very sorry to hear about the kitties found. I just lost my feral kitty that I bonded with. She's sweet and super fast and furious/lightening speed. So please check out this lady's information. I'm not going to give up looking for her. There are stories about cats being found MONTHS later. Even one cat in a hope chest 9 weeks without food or water. One hopped in the car engine and traveled to her owners work area. They become feral and QUIET. You can be walking feet away and they will NOT meow! I have not found any fur/or her little body so I'm not going to give up.
Do the 500 feet radius and knock on EVERY DOOR and give them a FLYER. They can be in the drainage, in a tree, under the porch, in the size of your fist they will find a hiding spot.
