Cozy Coop heater in brooder?

Actually, looking at the specs again, it says there is a thermostat and a controller in the cord? If that's the case, you could dial it back.
I had assumed that was just on/off, but maybe not.

I'd worry it could trigger the thermostat to shut itself off once the towel got hot. Or said towel may catch fire. To me, the risk isn't worth it.
Could shut it off....doubt it would catch fire.

It would take careful testing but wrapping the heater in something could get you the perfect temp. Towel, vinyl, etc.
For sure....somewhere safe and closely monitored.

Wow, lots of great information! Thank you all!!! A sweet friend of mine is letting me borrow her EcoGlow this round but I love the idea of the mama heating pad! I’ll keep the cozy coop for my bigger chickies.
Second question; just HOW smelly are baby chicks? I feel like I’m going to want to keep the cute fuzzy butts in my living room, but the rational side of me says the basement is a far better idea ;)

I have one of those Cozy Coop heaters for one of my smaller coops. I hung it on the wall, and I can't touch it when it's set on the high setting. I've also had it somehow turn off by itself a couple of times. I have no idea why it does that, but that wouldn't be good if I was using it for baby chicks.

I do, however, use the Mama Heating Pad system. I recommend it highly. It's soft and it's light weight, unlike the Cozy coop heater, and it doesn't get as hot.

The thing that makes the heating pad so successful is that the chicks can press their backs against the heating pad during the first week or two, just as they would under a broody hen. It heats their bodies efficiently in a way that a hard flat surface couldn't do as well.

If, for some reason the Cozy Coop heater fell down off whatever you have supporting it, it could crush the chicks and burn them to death. I do not believe it's safe to use as a brooder plate.
Oh goodness, I never considered the crush factor. That would be terrible :hit

Chicks aren't smelly as long as you remove the poop several times a day and keep the brooder bedding dry. Hang a water bottle to prevent it being knocked over and flooding bedding. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/how-to-hang-a-chick-water-bottle.957712/

The greater problem with brooding chicks indoors is the dust and dander. It's fine an greasy, and gets into places you never dreamed it could.

Better by far is to brood outdoors. Yes, you can. Chicks do splendidly outdoors in temps as low as 30s at night and 50s during the day. http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/r...rooder-and-start-raising-your-chicks-outdoors

I’m a bit of a clean freak (I “harvest fertilizer” from my 9 chickens at least once a day) so I think from that stand point I’d be ok, but the dust...ugh, I hate to dust & the thought of all that dander in my living room makes me cringe! But I’m afraid the temperatures swings outdoors will still be too great when they arrive. I’ll definitely be moving them to the garage or coop as soon as they are feathered out, however!!!

That’s a great idea for hanging the waterer, too. Thanks!

The EcoGlow has a minimum ambient temperature of 50F, it says this in the instructions. It was really designed to be used in an already heated house and so is very low wattage.

Thanks! The basement stays 68 year round, so it should work great!

I was going to say, try get an ecoglow 20 or a premier1 heat plate. Anyways, if you clean the chicks brooder once or twice a day and use an absorbent bedding the smell isn't as bad.

Now onto where to keep them...
We have 2 lounges, one with our tv and one for games, tables tennis etc, we keep them in the Gaming lounge because it is a big space and the smell isn't as bad and also because we spend alot of time in there so they get used to us walking around and hearing our voices, so something that meets that description I think will be good.
