Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

It seems that Legbar roosters are a hit or miss with personalities. Some seem like horrible little creatures lol while others are much better and less suspicious of people walking around. I have had my share of both. I cull for bad personalities. If he is your only CL male you can breed him and then try to keep one of his hopefully better looking and better mannered sons.

He is my only CL rooster. I do not plan on keeping him or the hens he came with. We do not enjoy having unfriendly chickens at home that squawk and run with fear every time a human walks through the yard. They are breeder birds as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to get some babies from them and then either cull the rooster or rehome the whole lot together.

If I do keep some of the chicks, is it OK to breed them back to their siblings or mom?

My half CL rooster is a charmer. I had to admit that I really like how he is turning out.

I have often wondered about that, especially when the CL hens have black tips on their salmon breast feathers...?!

Well, I have had pullets pop up with breast lacing and also random white spots in the back/hackle/wings that I just brushed off as culls but someone else had mentioned the term 'mottling' in their legbars. If I can find an ancona or other mottled rooster to borrow next year, I'll do a sexlinked cross to one of the more 'mottled' legbar pullets. Even to get a few chicks from them to see if the pullets show mottling would be nice. I have a few other legbar crosses in mind too but don't want to share them yet

Lol! No room in the coop right now, need to build another one. But since I also only have one 'bator I have to schedule my hatches carefully.

I count on mechanical limitations...like two very small incubators. I show great restraint, and then 7 hens go broody, 2 of them twice!

I work with cows every day so I have lots of time to day dream about genetics. Just for legbar crosses, I have 2 new outcrosses planned for next year, then maybe a mottled cross just to see, plus my amlegbar pullet who will be crossed to something else. Then a couple non-legbar mixes planned just because. Out of all of my legbar mutts, the legbar x phoenix pullets were the prettiest, and the splash laced red wyandotte x legbar cockerel was cool too.

I posted pics of them last year, they are in one of the threads. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find them. The cockerel was sold as a pet because everyone loved his pattern. The pullets went as layers and a few went to other breeders for projects.
