Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

I have 2 CCL x RIR chicks that both hatched with chipmunk striping. They are now 5 weeks and feathering in well, but unless that information you were given is correct, I can't say for certain yet whether they are pullets or not..... I really do hope so, because I am wanting them to be olive eggers. If anyone knows for sure, please put us out of our uncertainty!

The 2 legbar chicks that hatched with them are clearly one pullet and one cockerel and the other 4 which are exchequer leghorns are not showing any noticeable sex traits yet, so I will just have to wait a bit longer.

Hmmmm..... My 24-day old guaranteed pullet (CL x RIR) is combing up nicely.

I contacted the egg seller who, after seeing the pic, still insists it's a pullet.

I've NEVER seen a pullet comb up like that at under a month, even for leghorns.

Any thoughts and comments? Am I totally off-base on this?

Hi

Sorry I didn't get back to you with photos etc. Believe it or not I still haven't bitten the bullet and started using my new phone as it is so different to the old one I know it will do my head in and my current phone is still limping along albeit just!

I hate to add to your suspicions, but my 8 week olds' combs are only just about that size, but the chicks are twice that size. so it's not looking good. I was dubious about her claims of them being sex linked to start with and I am sure there are people on this thread who are very knowledgeable on genetics and will hopefully confirm that, but at least if they are guaranteed pullets and they turn out not to be, then you can take it/them back.... of course that doesn't help the heartache of parting with them once they have become part of the family.
Mine are growing fast and are noticeably bigger than their hatch mates which were pure CCL and exchequer leghorns. Of course the leghorns are not a big bird anyway, but I expected the legbars to be more or less the same size. I'm still not seeing any apparent cockerel traits in mine but not uncrossing my fingers yet.

Will definitely post photos when I get sorted. Sorry to keep you waiting. I have a lot on my plate right now and messing around with an unfamiliar phone is not top of them! In fact getting a new phone is one of my pet hates along with when your favourite supermarket has had a refit and nothing is where you expect it to be!

Regards

Barbara

I have 2 x CL x Red Star (ISA Brown) and 2 x CL X RIR scheduled to hatch November 2nd.
Anyone has pics of day old crosses to help me guess what to expect? Will they be sex linked? Shall I expect any dots on heads for boys? I know its probably discussed in the thread somewhere but am being just lazy and hopefully someone will spoon feed me.

I've heard that if you make crosses with a CL hen and a random rooster the chicks will end up being sex linked, but not the other way around. You'll only have to wait one more week to find out. LOL Can't wait to see what you get!

Oh, I did not know that. My rooster is CL not the hen.

You can use a CL rooster to make sexlinks. Because he is gold based you can cross him to a silver based hen to make Red Sexlinks which you can sex at hatch by down color, not by the head spot.
Since my crosses are done already, and I only have two each, I will just keep on wondering if they are pullets or cockerels unless they are in pairs and look different

Hi Junibutt

If you look at the top of this page Peep_Show has posted a photo of her CLxRIR at 24hrs old and then again as it feathers out. I have 2 of the same cross which look pretty much the same as Peep_Show's but are a few weeks older and don't have nearly as much comb, so it's looking like I may have 2 pullets. When I get my new phone out of it's wrapper I will take and post some photos, but as a technophobe I'm resisting until the old one dies completely.

I can't help you on the CLx red sex link though.

Regards

Barbara
