Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

Since my crosses are done already, and I only have two each, I will just keep on wondering if they are pullets or cockerels unless they are in pairs and look different
Take pics of them after they hatch and then document later who is male and female. Maybe you'll discover something new and can tell the rest of us the answer. ;)

I will. I hope all 4 of them plus the Legbar hatch so that they can keep each other warm during winter.

Here are some pics of my chicks hatched 11/02 .Please comment on the gender if you may.

First two are from CL x RIR- I think its a girl because of no head spot and distinct chipmunk pattern from Legbars but could be wrong.

Next two are from CL X Red Star. I am confused about this chicks gender
No distinct chipmunk pattern calls for a boy, but then there is no headspot (if Legbar barring trait is carried)
Feather pattern tells me its a girl but I could be wrong. Head is too big for a girl.
Its a big fat girl if she is. Whopping 2 oz (56 grams)

Here is a nice pic of both of the together:

Hi

Lovely looking chicks.

Unfortunately I have read many times on here, from people who know and understand genetics much better than I do, that the CL rooster will not pass on sex linked traits in this situation.

The photo's of Peep Shows chicks that I previously referred you to, show chipmunk striping and no head spot at 24 hrs but have large cockerel looking combs in the second set of photos a few weeks later. My two CL x RIR are now 10 weeks and still haven't got combs that big, so I think I've been lucky and got pullets, but I really think you are barking up the wrong tree trying to sex them at hatch. Hope you get lucky too and have mostly pullets though.

Regards

Barbara

Oh gosh! That comb is huge now! "Ethelred the Great" is looking like a more appropriate name I'm afraid, with a ruby crown like that. He does look like a little sweetheart though!
Four of my little 8 week old exchequer leghorns have combs of a similar size and comparing them to the other 4, I'm pretty certain they are cockerels.
I really must get this new phone/camera thing sorted because I feel like I'm missing out on such a lot here.

Quote: Actually, having done a bit more research it seems I was mixing up my Anglo Saxon kings and in fact it should be "Ethelred the Unready" which might be more appropriate anyway considering his age.
