Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

People's definition of olive is often different than reality. Personally I find it very frustrating when people think an ordinary brown egg crossed with a Legbar results in olive. It does not; it is green.

white + blue = light blue
tinted + blue = light green
brown + blue = green
dark brown + blue = olive

dark brown genes come from Welsummer and Marans chickens (not RIR).
@Gardeningmama please bookmark for future reference for your extremely beautiful easter basket, and thank you Ocho, it was in my original plan to obtain an Wells Roo from a man who happens to have good stock locally, but unfortunately plans change. I thank you kindly for your time everyone. I am sure Mich aka Gardeningmama will come back as she hatches and show us what she gets and share them as they grow as well, eh Mich? no pressure though

I will add that the eggs are from Freds hens HRIR stock and the eggs they lay are fairly dark in color is it fair to say that some may still lay a brown/tan egg? or will they all carry some blue in them?

lol those three chickens are seriously the goofiest chickens I have ever had, is it the Heritage in them? idk LOL..... Picture a family walking down to the newly free ranging flock and discussing naming them when all of a sudden we see these three red hens come barreling down over a hill fighting to see who could get to us first, half flying, half running, all squawking, and one barrel rolling, and one ending up about 5 feet BEHIND us instead of in front of us! Hubs instantly starting laughing and said they had to be named dumb dumb and dumber, which is perfect of course, but with young kids it didn't seem appropriate even though we had a great laugh and still do ever time they come barreling down! So thats where the stop drop and roll fell into place, but the next day we saw our fault with that too, and then the Lucy Ethel Annie didnt work because kids forgot them anyway, thats how they got to be Lucy lucy lucy.

just another reason to love chickens, laughter right?

Quote: Thanks Sally for posting, and thanks Ron for such a clear answer...I like the sound of dark red with some barring, and lime green is fine by me!!! I'm actually excited to give it a go.

I hope you dont mind me jumping in real quick, I had to sell off most of my flock due to illness and the remaining is free ranging. My question is, now there are a few HRIR running with the CCL and I have friends who want eggs and are wondering the result from the breeding the CCL over the HRIR hens, egg color and possible hen looks in general. Would this combo also be sexlinked? Thanks for your help, if anyone has time, I would appreciate thank you! SallyAnn

Hi @Sally Sunshine , so sorry to hear about your illness. Hopefully you get better before next year's hatch-a-longs. I think you have all your answers already but just wanted to repost pics of my CL roo x RIR hen. I set 3 eggs, 1 was clear, 1 did not pip and 1 hatched.

Here are the picture on day 1:

Although I have been advised, they are not feather sexible, however based on my hunch and feathers, I have named her Peach already

We will see in 6 weeks if she still stays Peach. Here are pics of its feathers:

By HRIR if you mean hatchery version, that is correct. I will try to take pics of the chicks legs and feet today. Just put them in the coop last night and feeling bad since temperatures are going to drop below freezing and stay that way for a few days. I guess their broody mama will have to cozy them for a few days. I hope she doesn't abandon them soon. She abandoned her last brood at 4 weeks exactly. Here is a pic of HRIR taken when she was 24 weeks old, I will try to take a fresh picture as well:
