Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

Nice photos of barred - do you know what those chickens actually are? Are they CL X Isbar? -- do you know the entire genetic sequence for Isbar (a bit off topic for CL hybrid thread....but it is something I haven't seen anyone with the knowledge of.) Thanks! Are the above autosexing by headspot?

those are Auto Sexing Silver Cuckoo Marans(based on double barred Birchen) the Males headspot is much larger than females and the chick down its about two shades lighter than females.. while females also have headspot its much smaller and the chick down remains dark

the genetic sequence for Isbars are ER/ER(Birchen) S/S(Silver) Bl/bl+ b+/b+ and some form of melanizers as they look more melanized than regular birchen(some pullets may appear solid blue)

the reason they have the sulmtaler skin color is because white skin is dominant over recessive yellow skin, The only problem I see with your cross is that you cant tell the sexes of the chicks from hatch(can you post pics of the chicks?) as wheaten and wildtype will fight to control of the chick down, and even if the chick down resemble wildtype, the headspot will not show on this type of cross

I didn't take pics because they looked like just regular yellow (wheaten) chicks, but with these, as with the Wheaten Sulmtalers, I could tell by week two which were the little cockerels because the wing color came in black as well as the added barring of their first feathers. It usually takes me three weeks to be sure with the pure Sulmtalers but these guys got their wing feathers about 5-7 days earlier.

with autosexing you can tell the chicks after a few moments after they hatch..!

If a CCL rooster is crossed with random hens, would all of the chicks get the barring gene from him? Or could some of them be non-barred? I hatched some chicks a couple of weeks ago but I"m not sure which rooster fertilized the eggs. I'm hoping it was my old roo and not the legbar.

If the Cream Legbar is the cock bird is the one that fertilized the eggs then yes each and every one of his offspring will show some degree of barring, some more than others. It may take many weeks-months to see the barring in some of the offspring.

Quote: Great, that is what I was thinking! My other roo (who died earlier this month) was only half CCL. Most of his chicks took on the coloring of their moms. About 1/4 of them started showing barring around 4 weeks. The new batch of eggs was laid about the time the rooster was sick and I wasn't sure who fertilized them. I'll have to wait a few more weeks to see how many are barred. If they are all barred, I will know! LOL I check one of the hen's eggs this morning and it is not fertile anymore, so I'm hoping at this point it is the old rooster that fathered her chicks.

I keep a CCL hen with my Splash Marans to make the best OE ever!
Female offspring are blue, usually laced, usually with a little crest. (Dudes are blue with a white spot on the head, so auto-sexing! Yippee!)
And check out the egg color! I tried Wheaten Ameraucanas first, but the egg color was totally random in the F1 pullets. With this cross, so far the olive green is pretty standard in the two batches I've hatched.

Here is Penny, my current POL pullet from the Splash Marans roo x CCL hen cross.

I plan on crossing my CCL (2 months old) and Black Copper Marans. (1 month old) in the late spring/early summer. If I use a CCL Roo over the maran hen will I have barred Olive Eggers that will be auto sexing? Can I switch it around and use a Maran roo over the CCL hen and still have auto sexing?(but probably no barring). I just want to add the Olive Eggs to my basket.

A CL male over Marans hen is not sexlink, all offspring of that cross will be barred to some degree and will show no sexing traits. A CL hen crossed to a Marans male will create Black Sexlinks, meaning male chicks will hatch with a white head spot and as they age will show barring, and females chicks will hatch black and as they age will remain black with some possible copper around the neck(collar).

By the way, the hen is beautiful. Might have to go with the Maran roo over the CCL hen.
