Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

Hello,

I have a small flock of Cream Legbars 5 hens and until last month one Roo. Sadly a hawk took my roo. I'm looking to get a new Roo and was thinking I'd get either a BCM or a black birchen Marans to make an "olive egger". I have a few questions.

1) I understand that a cross from a Back Roo would produce a Sex link with the pullets being all black and the Roos having a white spot on their heads. Does anyone have a picture of the cross with the Marans Roo and the CCL hen? Also a picture of an adult hen? My gals have a pretty big Crest and I'm wondering if the crest comes through with this cross?

2) My guess is the black birchen would also produce a sex link (silver instead of copper). Does anyone know for sure? Also are the eggs about the same darkness as the bcm?

3) From what I read the Marans are mellow birds but gosh the roos look huge compared to the hens. My gals are petite and I was wondering if the Marans are "gentlemen" when it comes to breeding. My guy would hunt bugs to impress all day for the gals and never mount without an invitation. I know each Roo is an individual but has anyone had any trouble with a marans being too aggressive with the gals?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Deborah

My hens love my big golden cuckoo Marans rooster. I have true Ameraucanas that are on the smaller side and he is big and gentle with them and a great protector. I don't have extra roos, but I do have eggs. The GCM rooster crossed with my Ameraucanas make real pretty OEs that lay a beautiful green egg.

But would a GCM over a Cream Legbar make a sexlink?

I may be wrong about this -- and sure to be corrected if I am -- but my understanding is that the chicks from CCL hens are auto-sexing, but not so with CCL roos over other breeds of hens.

CL hens crossed to the correct males(not all males) will create Black Sexlinks (not auto sexing chicks though).

And I already mentioned about the CL male in the above post:)

That is a good question. The Cream Legbars are sex link and Golden Cuckoo Marans are sex link. There coloring is vary similar. Maybe someone will give us the answer to that question.

@Peep_Show

So sorry I haven't posted a photo of my CCL x RIR pullets. I'm afraid I still haven't got to grips with my new phone (I'm a serious technophobe). Delighted though to report that one of these pullets started laying 2 days ago at exactly 23 weeks. The eggs are tiny but a beautiful olive colour and she has given me 2 in 2 days in the official nest boxes. She's is such a good girl! Considering that the blue/green eggs I get from my other barnyard mix pullets that were sired by the same rooster are so pale (you almost need to see them next to a white egg to realise they are coloured), this egg is very definitely and distinctively olive green. I'm absolutely thrilled to bits with her and definitely want more of this hybrid. She really is my favourite and she is such a pet. Sadly her sister has relapsed with Mareks and is currently in sick bay with leg paralysis. I'm guessing the stress to her body of puberty has triggered the attack. She looks well and eats well (bright eyes and alert and beautiful red comb) but is lying down most of the time.
How is yours doing? Did you manage to find a home for him or did he go to freezer camp? Was he a decent size for a table bird? I'm just wondering as I definitely intend to breed more of this cross and won't be so lucky as to just get pullets next time. My pullets are definitely not as big as their RIR mother or father obviously.... probably more like leghorn size. It's interesting that they are by far my most friendly hens when neither their father, mother or broody mother will allow me to handle them and none of my other chicks from the same brood or previous broods are so tame. I guess it is one of the main reasons I like them so much.
