Are pure legbars just not suitable for so cal? Ive had THREE die on me from 3 diffrent buyers. First one was suposted to be of laying age died after 2 weeks never laid. 2nd one was about 3 months died in a few days. This last one i just had die. I had her since she was 2 days old. She would have been 6 months her brother is big and beautiful but she always seemed small and then bamn she was dead. What gives? Am i cursed with these guys or what?

I've bought chicks from Papa's Poultry in Redding (Northern CA) and they have done very well. Had a few deaths but all was due to shipping stress. Those that made it past the first two weeks all survived and grown hens are laying. I did have some chicks ordered from Greenfire Farms. One of them died at about two months old and I don't know why. The stock from Papa's Poultry seems to be very robust as they are from four different lines, and they lay blue eggs. The Rees legbar hens from Greenfire are laying green eggs. I love the look of the Rees line, but I am partial to blue eggs.

It's been very warm lately. Is the coop in an area where they don't get overheat due to weather? With triple digit temps, they could die from the heat.

The coop is in the sun but shaded with a tarp plus they had water and a sprinkler nearby to cool it down. It was only 80 today. Last monday it was 110. Which is really abnormal for here. I guess i should move the cage im just limited as to where our backyard is kinda tore up as were in the process of redoing the chicken pen. I know where i need to move them ill just have to get help. I was hoping to let them into the pen with the others but they are all free ranging and the younger ones about to lag are in a cage.

A friend of mine loses some hens every summer when the temps get in the triple digits. You may want to put ice cubes in their water containers when it's that hot. If you see them pant, they are overheated and are trying to cool down.

Bielefelder roo over CL hen... There are two so far and they're both brown with no head spots or stripes....

Hi everyone, these chicks are either Rhodebar x Rhodebar, Rhodebar x CL, or Welsummer x CL. The CL is a roo. There were some very obvious males when first hatched, but there are a few that were questionable in coloring since the start (could have gone either way) and also one that all of a sudden has a larger comb than the others. I have one more I'm wondering about that I didn't get a good picture of yet, I'll work on that and post again soon.

They are 10 weeks old now. Take a look, any thoughts on sex would be appreciated:

This one above right and right, has lighter coloring that obvious pullet colors for these breeds, but the comb is nowhere the size that the obvious males was. This is definitely one of the CL mixes, due to head pouf.

This one above has always had a lot of pink skin showing on face... Coloring to me though says pullet. Same one below.

I am also in SoCal and have had a considerable number of Cream Legbars for about 4 years, no problem with the climate, very healthy and active.

I have CLxWelsummer mixes, they don't really look like any of your pics. The pullet offspring basically looks like a melanized gold CL.
