Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

The first 3 that I got was a breeding trio, and they were 3 weeks old. I really wasn't looking for a rooster, but he came for free. I only wanted the blue eggs that they would lay, because all of my other hens were laying light tan eggs so it would be easier to have those to eat. They screamed when you tried to pick them up, and the 2 hen's from that still do. I culled the rooster, but he did have a loud crow and crowed often. I had also bought a dozen blue hatching eggs from the same person. Only one pullet hatched out from those, so she was raised for 2 weeks by herself until my White Breese hatched, so she was much more friendly and didn't mind being held. I named her Miracle. I like Miss Fuffy the best though, because she has a more fuller crest on top of her head.

My White NN/White Breese mixed rooster crows sometimes, and the crow is not as loud or sharp. He moves out of my way when I go in there to feed, collect eggs, or to clean. He is the rooster in my avatar.

He’s cute! How funny he looks so skinny with a naked neck. That’s interesting about the screaming when you pick them up. My hybrids started doing that at a week or so when I was too busy to handle them much but then they changed to a happy twert once I snuggle them. They prefer sitting on my hand & jump up on their own.
One freaked out when I caught her to save her from the other hen & I put her back with mom & she trusted me completely ever since. 4/11 never got tame to hold but all eat out of my hand.

My CL rooster was one of 2 that survived an incubator malfunction & then my daughter held him in her shirt for the 1st 8 hours until the other hatched. He always assumed people are part of the flock. They slept in a big aquarium by my bed for weeks before I moved them to the porch. He followed me everywhere , rode on my shoulder, slept in my lap. He knows I won’t hurt him, so I have to lock him in a chick hutch as time out when he gets cocky. Usually he makes a gangster fake lunge at me when I’m feeding the hens (so jealous) & then he runs when I turn to him. Wants to look tough in front of the hens. :)
His crow isn’t loud but he always does a little soft wind down humming after each crow.
He’s quirky, he gets excited when he sees fresh shavings & calls the hens frantically to show them. He crawls in nests & coos softly like when he’s dust bathing.
He likes me to praise him for hawk warnings & likes me to pet his head above the eye while he falls asleep like when he was little & he snuggles on me in the hammock. But he’s a gangster as well as a momma’s boy, he’s gotta look tough for the girls I guess.
He’s my avatar too at 3 weeks old, I suppose I should update it.

My White NN/Breese roo isn't that skinny. That picture was taken a couple months back, and he's starting to fill out now. The NN's have less feathering even on the body than some of the other breed's. I am hoping by crossing him with my 3 CCLB hen's, that I will get some chicks with the NN from the roo's side, but will also have the crest from the hen's.

Oh I didn’t think he looks skinny just his neck. He’s very pretty, I’ve never seen one of those, what does NN stand for?
My CL hybrids feathered so fast but one of the fastest had a patch of fuzz come off on her neck with sparse feathers & her neck looked skinny to me is what made me notice his neck. :) mine all have at least 1 feather standing up as a bit of a crest by 4-6 weeks, some more than others. I’m guessing crest must be dominant but I don’t know.

NN stand's for Naked Necks. It started out with the Naked Neck Turken breed, but the NN is also a gene that can be bred with any other breed of chicken, and you can breed the mixed ones to get many different color of feather's or eggs, depending on which way that you want to go with them. My main purpose in breeding them is because they will do better in our hot desert summer heat.

I have 2 chicks hatched out right now. The one from the CCLB blue egg is fully feathered on the neck and is white in color. The one that hatched from my tan egg is NN'd and blue in color. I'm waiting for the rest to hatch.

Ah thanks, that’s very interesting. They sound beautiful. I get mixed up on initials, I don’t spend enough time online I guess. I was going to ask what cclb meant but I figured it out. :) I was confused since the Cream Legbar people said pretty emphatically that the name is “Cream Legbar” & used CL so I was a bit lost at first.

That’s interesting about them handling the heat better, my CL rooster does well with heat but my Orpingtons don’t. Hoping the hybrids will do well with both heat and cold. They sure love running through the pond to catch bugs mosquito larvae. :)

I have heard that there are some "Cream Legbars" that don't have the crest, but mine do. I especially like the one hen that I have that has more crest on her. I named her Miss Foofy. My other hen has a smaller one.

Haha! That’s a cute name! Do you have a picture? From what I’ve read there is another kind of Legbar without a crest but all Cream Legbars have crests of varying sizes, just the actual name of the breed is Cream Legbar. I guess those Cambridge guys were more interested in color than in foofiness. :)

No, I don't have a recent pic of Miss Foofy. I need to take some more pics of my flock, and my new chicks even. Most of the breeder's who are breeding for the standard for show, don't breed for the bigger crests in these, but I like it and wish that my other hen had a bigger crest too. I'm going to wait for a couple more weeks until I incubate some more of my eggs.
