Another thing I like is that the comb is more moderate as the SOP calls for. I think some of our CL cockerels have combs that are in the range of Large to my eye. (Also referenced the APA's SOP book that I have on single combs.... and I think that photo has been posted in these threads)

wow this is a fast moving thread.  I have not been able to keep up.  I do have a question however.  Will a dark down chick look similar to a light down chick of the same gender once their feathers come in?


And the goal is to avoid the more color and stay close to cream for the SOP?  I ask because I only want to feed up one rooster and 3 hatched.  Two were light and 1 was dark downed.  The choice would be really easy if I just picked the dark downed one to pair with the dark downed only female to hatch.  And I understant that to pick the best rooster I would really need to grow out all three but with only 1 female and a few other roosters of different breeds, I'm choosing to keep only 1 CL rooster from this hatch.

You may want to look at some other traits besides down colors if you are on the fence between two. If it were me, I would look at leg color (choose the most yellow or slightly willow/yellow over pale), take a good hard look at the comb and see if you can see uniformity in the points or even see the number of point and assess it for deviations. You may be able to see what will turn in to a diagonal comb if the crest is large. (Probably wouldn't keep a large diagonal if you see that tendency). I would track growth (daily weight in grams) and see trends and pick the larger faster growing chick over a smaller one.

I tend to be one of those folks that sit and look at their chickens and think about gut feelings about them and make decisions based on that little voice. I guess am not good about giving advice on one picture or a thought because the chickens are moving about and I like to see the whole package, but that's just me.

That being said, I would love to see pictures. It might be interesting to post pictures of the parent stock the ebayer posted if you happen to have them!

An update for some of my cream legbars and some new arrivals.

I posted some pictures earlier on some chicks that I had acquired at the Gilmanor Swap in Virginia. A few of these pictures are reposted along with updated pictures. The hatch date was ~ September 18.







These pictures show the chicks at 5 weeks of age. They were taken outside just before sunset so the the colors may be affected by these conditions. Colors appear to be good and both are crested. The little roo may have a larger crest than any of my other roosters but this is speculative as yet.














The new arrivals were hatched on October 12. One small male came from a test hatch from pullet eggs. The other male and female came from a NC breeder's hatching eggs. The new arrivals also included a white sport cream legbar from my eggs. I'm so so mad right now! I could just blow up! I come to collect eggs and find only 5 of my cream legbars instead of 6!.. the back part of the coop was unlocked, but not open. I think she may hve been stollen.. there is no other ways for her to escape, unless taken out
