Check with your State Vet office. Most States have something setup to do a necropsy. Here in Virginia, they will do it for free.

In California the University of California Davis, in conjunction with their veterinary program, has labs throughout the state where they will accept chickens which have died or been euthanized. The standard necropsy is free and very comprehensive; additional tests are available for a fee. The standard test would identify if worms are the problem; it seems like worms are usually a side condition as a result of the main problem.

While you are looking for a possible source of necropsy, it is standard procedure to triple bag the chicken and place in a refrigerator, not freezer. I have found the extra large ziplock baggies (2 gallon?) work well for hens, maybe for roosters too. I have been advised to ship in a double box and include an ice pack next to the chicken.

Sorry for your loss therrychicken, hope the next step is rewarding.

(I posted this on The Legbar Thread and thought I'd been banned or something, cuz I only had a couple of comments --very nice comments tho! I guess nobody's using that thread anymore?).
Hi ya'll! Here's a pic of the only roo I kept out of my last hatch of 20 @ 15 weeks (2nd gen from Line 1 or 2 GFF). I didn't do a real good job of documenting chick down, but I think he was the dark grey chick (and the largest). He is longer than his dad (don't know which hen), has better defined/darker barring on his chest and a much better crest. Comb is straight so far. What do y'all think? He's cream over saddles but does his neck look more silver? He was the largest of all the roos I hatched, too.

Hi y'all! I hv a 10 mo old Roo that I'll give to someone who's a "real" breeder. He's the boy on the right-- and this pic was from when he was 6 mos. He's filled out some and comb is still straight and follows back of head better. I had narrowed it down to these 2 boys to keep (this boys comb is perfect) but the other has creamier saddles so this one can go. I've had him in the pen w/ his "brother" but now he's getting beat up and I don't hv another pen for him. I'm going to be competing (horses, not chickens!) at the San Antonio Stock Show next weekend---I'll bring him if anyone wants to pick him up there.
