To make a sexlink using a barred bird, the barred bird in the equation is indeed the female. If you cross a female barred hen to a non barred male (also not white) she will pass her barring gene to her sons only, giving them a head spot at hatch. The sons will grow up displaying some sort of barring on their adult feathers. Daughters of this cross get no barring gene and will typically display characteristics like her fathers coloring.
A double barred male such as the Cream Legbars males if used will pass on a barring gene to both sons and daughters giving them both head spots at hatch and both will display a degree of barring on their adult feather.
However Male CLs can be used to create a Red Sexlink. Since CL are gold based you can use a CL male crossed to a Silver based female to get a Red Sexlink that at hatch you can sex by the color of the down(not head spots)
