Cream Legbars

Back to the discussion of color. Reading the original description of the Cream Legbar (see http://www.ias.ac.in/jarch/jgenet/41/1.pdf) , I wonder if its like the Jaerhon where the "gold" is a darker variety and the "cream" is a lighter variety. It could be that we get wonky colors because we are breeding for the dark variety in males and the light variety in females. Just a thought.

You are talking about down colors? or colors of the adult?

Well, it may be both. The Rees birds look closest to the standard, but produce some very light chicks and adults as well as the darker ones. I just wonder if maybe there is an adult dark variety and adult light variety which messes with chick down color if we breed the two varieties together. Just a thought given that they did test matings with dark and light birds in the beginnings of the breed.

what info do you have about testing dark and light at the beginning? that would be interesting...and maybe the Reese birds are not the closest to the standard. The place that they diverge the most is that they often lack the very dark breast that is required in the SOP. :O)

In that attached article, at the bottom above the pictures of variations in chick down color, they discuss matings of light and dark Legbars and that the dark variety seems to be dominant to light.

Yes! Thank you - I do remember that now.

And since Pease said that the Cream Legbar chicks down should be as the gold Legbar, then it should all be a parallel IMO.

I have one CL out of the shell. But she is in the ICU the other two eggs have not even pipped.. I am afraid my CL are a bust. I hope the next 7 eggs I have in do better.

I will get a picture for you if she/he gets better. I have not even looked to see what she/he is because of the way it is laying.

Thanks the two have not even pipped. The one looked like a non-starter so I have no hope for it, but one of them looked real good. However I will be the first to admit my candling skills are sub-par.
Remember too that blue eggshells are hard to candle IMO - Lots of time toward the very end all I can see is dark mass and an air cell. Give them the full length of time -
