Crele Bantam Cochin Project

Would it not take "forever" to get the cochin type back if you outcross to OEBG??? I think I'll just stick to a "look alike". I'm too old to work on a "forever" project

It would not take fovever, but a lot longer than I want to do it, but PLEASE someone go for it and keep us updated on the progress.
I will settle for the look-a-like as well

Ia m getting to old too!

JenEric, It's not just the extra generations involved. It would require a lot more hatching and culling with every generation.

If you absolutely 100% are intent on out-crossing, I would certainly look for BBR in a breed a lot closer in type to Cochins.

(I'm not buying green bananas anymore, either!!)

Just what (Cochin) color varieties would be involved in getting to a BBR Cochin? - wouldn't have to be perfect - just get the gene pool you need.

I have BRs, but I didn't think the hens would have enough color..but if I had the time and pen to do it I would give that a try.
Also Partridge roos have more color in the wing, which BRs lack. BR hackle color is darker than what I would want on Crele too.

What breed do you think would work better?

Here is some Brown Reds. Well, what do you all think and how do you think they would make a Crele look-a-like ? Notice how the wing doesn't have the triangle like a Partridge does(Crele has the triangle). I guess you could cross them with barred and then cross them with the Barred Partridges and see what comes from it.

oh if you have an extra pair of those to sell please let me know!

I would think they would work in a look alike. Breed a BR roo to a barred hen.. It's work a try... I have barred hens... And pen room... Hint hint

lol

Just an up-date on the white chicks that have hatched out from my project- they do have some black feathers in spots. Here is another interesting chick, I would have thought this dark chick would have feathered out black\\white barred, but red wings from black project chick(obviously from the Partridge genes)...this is so interesting. Can hardly with to see the chicks grown...

Steve,

I think the chick pictured has real potential. I've noticed that the white chicks have very sparse foot feathering. Do yours? The brown chicks seem to have the best feet. Gosh I wish they would grow quicker

There isn't much difference in them. That is one thing I don't think I will have to worry about if foot feathering. All my breeders in this project are heavy on the foot feathering. So I am

they will pass this to all progeny.
