Crested Cream Legbar Genotype vs. Phenotype

Pics
I didn't post yet, because I need to fix some areas, but here is a quick shot. This is my first painting based on my original thoughts of the Cream Legbar Type. It's not perfect by any means (ie the hens legs need to come forward, and her whole body is needs to drop down more horizontal), and I'm still playing with the idea of curving the back more into the tail in both birds (like figure 39 in the front of the APA SOP that shows a healthy chicken). But it will give me something to use to glance at quickly when I'm evaluating shapes (like the bottom line running parallel to the top line, and a nicely curved breast area).

Thanks for doing this! I think the rooster looks on target. Not so sure about the hen, though.

Is maintaining egg color important in this breed? I have read some breeds yes and some no. I know egg color should not be most important but does it matter? If so, is there an egg color chart or is the Ameraucana or the Araucana egg color chart used? I have seen the Ameraucana used more often.

I agree 100%. I think I'm going to just move the hen's legs/fluff for this one instead of painting the whole hen over, but the next one will have bigger changes.

Yes and no. Am I allowed to say that?

We do refer to the Online Auction Chart for reference, but there is no acceptable color range at the moment. Basically we want the eggs to be blue, but some people see blue as green...so blue or green is acceptable. But we are also not going to accept changing the bird in negative ways just to keep a particular eggshell color.

As long as your eggs are mint green to sky blue, I would encourage you to keep an eye on egg color as you breed, but to breed based on the birds more than the eggs for now.

Is there an Online Auction chart I can buy? Where?

Really nice work KP --- I agree with Hapless runner....Since hen's legs are medium length in SOP - they may need a tad bit of length - Legs moved forward as you plan may take away the hollow at the bottom of her breast where it joins the fluff... It has a name - at least in the UK "cut away Just starting Grant Brereton's book "Breeding for Success" and he shows it in a rooster on pg.13- but he also explains that the appearance of having it can be caused by a bad camera angle. You really did a good job on this - Thanks!

BTW Grant Brereton is going to have a seminar in March here in the USA in ----North Carolina--- according to his website. :O) http://www.gbpoultry.com/Home.html

When was mint green added to the acceptable egg color? I don't understand the statement.. "there is no acceptable color range at the moment", the acceptable color range is blue.. even with a greenish tint, but blue was the intended color for Cream Legbar eggs.. according to Punnet (and GFF's original ad). I understand that some people may interpret green as blue or vice versa, but some people see color as shades of gray, too. The source of light can throw color off, too. But mint green is not a color that was intended for the Cream Legbar. It just wasn't. and YES DeannaA, egg color is important. Auto-sexing, Blue egg, Crest The ABC's of what makes Cream Legbar a Cream Legbar. I understand the body type must be met acccording to standard, but so must the ABC's be met as the very definition of a Cream Legbar. They are usually the FIRST 3 points made to describe a CL to someone that hasn't heard of them.

Yes, I can see how a person with a good eye for color would be driven totally berserk by the color names in the world of chickens..... Blue eggs although referring to the blue egg gene O/O -
includes all these colors on the Araucana Egg color chart (colour chart) originated by Mr. Frank Decmar of the UK --- probably just because it is so confusing to call all these colors blue...As dretd pointed out in another post somewhere 3/4 of them are what we would call green in normally speaking of colors.
