Crested Cream Legbar Genotype vs. Phenotype

Congratulations M! It had to be a hard choice! Best wishes for a great season

Thanks K.
It was a bit of a headache as I try to do what I feel is best in my own thoughts and for my own flock. There is so much we don't know about the Cream Legbar and what underlies some of the aspects we are seeing in our birds that I feel more comfortable making my own mistakes than following anyone else down a road that is not clear to me. So far I've got it down to 7 of the 11 boys for the Spring (8 but one is just too young to cull for sure right now). I'm keeping a Black Copper and Splash Marans - 2 total and culling the extra splash. And 4 CCLs (5 for now with the youngster) and 1 Sport. So I'm culling now then another one or two later this spring once I see what youngest one looks like and if the White Sports are a go or not. Of the boys I keep I will cull those down more once I see what they produce. Macbeth will retire once I get a nice F3 male from mating him to my own F2 young 2013 pullets. The girls I am dying to get a good look at. I have NPIP testing later this month so that's when I'll try and do a lot of my note taking. I will be toe-punching this year and starting an 'official' breeders log. I do not have the desire to really count or weigh eggs and the like but I will do so intermittently and make decisions on egg color as I go forward. I wanted to keep 6 boys so 7 is not too far off... just one more, right?

Thanks K.

(normanack here) So what is it about the boys that makes us want to keep them? I have four and only really need one . . . . such personalities!
(However, personality only goes so far when the hens' feathers get scratched and pulled off.)

Do you have pictures of your 4 boys?

I don't have current ones but some have been posted on the various Legbar threads before. Too much snow today.
Since they are all ig/ig cream, and I don't see any glaring tail issues and I only kept boys with good yellow legs and they are all crested. I'm keeping them based on barring as they each have a different type of barring. Combs because they have the best combs from each example..... funny thing is I have at least 2 boys for each of the 3 types of barring I have. I culled for other issues before this. I'm going to use Macbeth with some of the young pullets from last year and the others with the older hens and 2013 females. I'm going to try and play around and see what pops up.

I have 3 CCL hatched from bought eggs. 2 males, 1 female. They are now 16 days old, feathering out but NO sign of a crest. Since I'm a newbie and this is my first experience with CCL, do they develop a crest as they develop further or is the crest evident from day one?
