I like your blog, Jen. I just got into crocheting. I would love to help out with the hats for the cancer patients as well. I have a ton of time on my hands and would also like to make my 2 boys a couple of beanies for winter. If anyone can show me a step by step video that's easy, that would be great. Thank you.
Ok, so here's my long how I learned (still learning
) to crochet story. I'm sure some of you might have heard it before, but here it goes.... I learned all the basics how to crochet when I pretty young from my grandmother, but it was hands on training. She taught me how to hold the hook & yarn and the difference in ch, sc, dc, etc... I loved it right away, BUT she didn't teach me to read patterns.
I bought pattern books over the years later thinking how hard could it be since I knew how to do most the basic stitches. NOT!!!
I'd pull them out desperately wanting to follow them to create something beautiful, but get so frustrated and couldn't even get started, so tucked them away. Then when I was pregnant w/ my DD I really, really wanted to make her a blanket.
My Mother in-law taught me a pattern she knew that had been passed down from her grandmother & mother, but there again it was hand on training. I found out later that it was a Miles a min pattern.
So I started DD a baby blanket in that pattern over 17 yrs ago, but didn't finish it before she was born. I tucked it away and pulled it back out a year or so later to finish it, but added more rows to make a toddler size one. She still uses it to this day even though it's a multicolor pastel yarn. I'm finally getting around to making her one in the yarn of her choice. I told her it will be her go to college blanket at the rate I'm going.
I'm still learning how to decipher patterns. Jen, it really hurts my brain too!!!!
The first pattern I learned how to read was the basic granny square from the crochetcabana site, b/c it also had step by step pics w/ the instructions. I guess that was about 3 years ago b/c I wanted to participate in the BYC Granny Square SWAP. I participated in a few more SWAPS on here later using it as practice to learn a new granny square pattern. So I guess you could say that b/c of BYC I finally willed my way to learn how to read patterns.
Thank you everyone for all your help!!! This is a great place to learn & share!
