My grandfather tought me to crochet half of my lifetime ago. I am slower than a snail when I crochet with yarn (afghan/blankety stuff), but I fly through doilies. I made 4 of them in the past week and a half, two were smaller doilies (under 12" across) and two were progressivley larger with the last that I just finished being nearly 24" across. I have a fifth that I've got a little more than half done (got to the 24th of 27 rows and found a mistake back in row 10!), but I'm just not feeling the red that it is in... The two smaller ones are in Lavender, the next I did in bright Pink and Black (for my sister), the largest is in cream. I need a new doily pattern book too, my 5 patterns I have are getting a bit "old", lol. I may go pick up another book tomorrow though. Pineapples are a bit overdone in my home, lol.
As for the "ending issue", I'm guessing you're talking about crocheting in a round and the finishing off the last round? I don't have issues with my ends showing up once everything is woven in...but according to my mother, I crochet "wrong", lol. But, my stitches are usually a bit tighter than her's are too (a differnece in how we hold our hooks and yarn), so maybe you crocheted more loosely? It's hard to tell without seeing it in person to get a "feel" for it.
