Crochet "Chat"

Is it common to pick up on crocheting with just watching a few videos and looking at a couple pictures or does it usually take someone longer? I've seemed to of picked up on the double crochet pretty quick as long as I watch to make sure I don't catch my hook.

Hehehe, let me tell you a little tale... The girl who taught me to crochet didn't really know what the stitches were. She learned and memorised a flower square pattern by watching someone else do it, then she taught a few of the girls {including me} at our church. I knew how to do a double crochet before I knew what a double crochet was. After I knew how to make that square, I did a lot of Googling and a lot of reading, and eventually I learned how to read patterns properly and understand the stitches. Considering you actually learned correctly, by watching video's and looking at pictures of the basics before launching into something difficult, I'd say it's perfectly alright

And, I'm no expert, but if you have crocheting questions, you can PM me and I'll help however I can.
Have fun crocheting!

Yes, it's called the crocodile stitch and it's best to see a video tutorial how to do since the written pattern is a little confusing... at least it was to me. The pattern is available for free from Bernat here: http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=6267

And here is the video tutorial part 1:

There are also many other free patterns with the crocodile stitch available if you google them. Also, more on Etsy and Ravelry.

Thanks for the links! I'll definitely check that out. I'm thinking about making a scarf with the stitch, but I guess I'd better finish the one that is fast becoming a UFO, first...

I'm glad to hear someone else learned easily. So far I have the slip stitch, the chain, and the double crochet down pretty good on how to do them. I had a little trouble with the single at the bottom of my hat since I kept wanting to do a double.

I just finished the main hat a little while ago. My fingers are sore from all the hook movement. I'm glad I decided to try it on before doing all 15 rows. I knew my head was a little bit smaller so I didn't want it to big and have it in my eyes.

One thing I am wondering is when I'm doing my hat I use a place holder on the third chain of a new row so it is easy to tell where it is. When I come around and get to the end of the row I've been doing my last double in the stitch right before the chain and then do my slip stitch into the third stitch of the chain where my place holder is followed by two chains. Am I doing that right or am I suppose to go into the first chain and then slip stitch the third chain?

Also I would like to do a goblin/elf hat where it has the long bit that is pointed and hangs down. Pretty much similar to the Green Goblin from Spiderman but I'm not sure what the type of hat this is called to look it up. I wouldn't mind making one of them or some of those really cute snug rugs with a matching hat that I've seen in the baby photo shoot pictures. The dinosaur and turtle ones were really cute.

Love the mermaid purse Green Family!

I'm new to this thread. I just bought a crochet baby blanket on Sunday from a poultry swap and got thinking that it might be fun to do and a simple design might be easy. I got looking up crochet blankets and realized that a couple blankets my aunt made for my dad she had crochet that I loved.

Yesterday I went to Walmart and bought a Boye kit that had a book, disc, 6 crochet hooks, and a couple of other things in it. I bought some Red Heart worsted 4 ply yarn. At least I think it is a 4 ply. Has a 4 on the picture with the yarn. Still trying to learn the yarn types.

I decided I wanted to make beanies and baby blankets so I probably picked the harder one to try first which was the beanie. The first attempted I used a G hook. Took me 15 minutes to get 4 chains started. I kept having trouble trying to do them while not tightening them from trying to hold the end. Once I got started it was easier. I used a site online with a video and it wasn't turning out right. I think I was messing up the chain after the slip stitch. They said 3 but I wasn't probably counting the slip stitch as one of the 3.

I looked around and found another video for my second attempt. I decided to try the H hook since it wasn't to big and I wanted to make a hat that might fit my head which isn't to big. I was having a hard time pulling the hook through and not catch part of the other yarn in the stitch. This time I tried starting with the magic loop (I think that is what it was called) and used a place holder for the spot to do my slip stitch when I made it around. It was hard to get started again but became easier. The video only uses the magic loop, chain, double crochet, and the slip stitch which made it easy to follow.

So far for my second attempt it isn't looking to bad for me never crocheting before and trying to make a beanie instead of a square. I've put a few hours into it so far and left off with my 7th row.

I did take a picture of what I have so far to share. It is probably noticeable that the right one was my first attempt. There is a little bit of a line on the second one but still a lot better than the first. Does it seem like I'm doing alright with it? I still have to do 8 or more rows yet. Is it common to pick up on crocheting with just watching a few videos and looking at a couple pictures or does it usually take someone longer? You're doing great!!! I learned easily from a book but my Grandmother taught me when I was very young so I probably retained some of it somewhere even though I didn't consiously remember any of it. Keep up the good work! If the beginning came easily to you then the rest of the stitches will flow without much effort as well!

From what I'm understanding, it sounds like you're doing it right

Very nice. I have some stuff I've made too ...
Fish hat I made my son for his birthday.

baby blanket for my soon to be nephew...

And my big and little mermaid tears purses. I sold the smallest one to a childhood friend for her Mother's Day gift to her Mom. I have tons more pix, but that's all I'm gonna post now lol.

I seen some purses similar to those that had an alligator head on them. They are very cute. I may try to make one sometime. I like reptile stuff.

I'm trying to find a good stocking hat pattern. I want one that is long and the small end widen as it goes up. Most of what I've seen stays pretty small till it gets to the head. It may seem a little out there for a second project but I would like to attempt to make a hat similar to the shape of the one in the picture. I think I could probably make the back like a regular stocking, then only do the rows half way around, and make the pointed part on the front like I was adding ear flaps but make it pointed instead of rounded. The pieces in front of the ears will be a bit tricky but I think I could make them after I finish the rest of the hat or leave them off. If the hat turns out then I might try to add some of the side head with the ears to it or have them made like a head wrap that I can wear under the hat.

Does it seem like I'm pushing it a little bit to far? I like to push myself at art stuff or I don't get better.

No, I think you can do that. It doesn't really seem that crazy hard. You might have to rip out a few rows and try again, but who hasn't had to do that ???

when I made the fish hat, you start w/ the brim, the lips of the fish and work your way back and down the tail. That might make it a bit easier... or try to find a Santa hat pattern and modify it?

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to everyone. I've been so darn busy with family situations. My husbands 99 year old sister (he's the baby at 75) passed away and we drove 3500 miles round trip in 5 days to go to her funeral. Then a few days after that I drove 200 miles round trip by myself to go see my granddaughter that was taking special training with the army near here and I wanted to see her before she went back east. Anyway, I'm going to try and upload the photo of the canopy I crocheted so you can all see it. It was a big project but quite easy to crochet as the pattern was simple.very nice is it all single crochet? did you wing it or follow a pattern/ what were the multiples? Very very nice :)

I love the shape of the hat even though it isn't one of my favorite comic characters. Reminds me of a elf hat with a little bit of added style. I never thought of going from the front to the back. I'd probably have an easier time starting with the tail end and work from there so if I mess up the front end I can just add some more rows and have a regular stocking hat to wear. I might give it a go and see how it turns out. I can always easily pull it back apart and use the yarn for something else. Should I do this hat as a double or singe crochet?

I may try to make a Catwoman hat later along with a TMNT, bear, skunk, and chicken one. I'll end up with so many hats I won't know what to do with them all. I will try baby items later but get the softer fuzzy yarn for them.
