I have a question bout chickens. I have 2 really really big oak trees in my yard that make acorns that are so big they really hurt if one hits you falling. They are bigger than my pecans that fall in the front yard. My question is this, does anyone have any idea if there are any reasons why I shouldn't be feeding them to my chickens? I was outside just now with a pair of wire plyer type things breaking the acorns so the chickens could eat the soft yellow inside stuff and they loved it. There are so many every year they are annoying and if they wont hurt the chickens or make them sick then I figured I could make good use of them instead of having them for yard litter. We have hundreds of little oak trees come up every year and can only give so many away. lol

unless the trees/acorns are chemically treated, there is no reason why your chickens can't eat them. People can eat them too.

I would do research first though before you fed them to the family of people.

After I posted my question I googled eating acorns and found all sorts of info. Still never found any answer if it would make chickens sick if they got loooooots of them lol. I just learned that deer and woodpeckers like them too. Guess my chickens wont get sick if I give them some once in a while. Next fall I will collect them like they are pecans and shell them when I am bored for my chickens as a treat. They seemed to love them.

Tikki, just take all those unfinished afghans and squares and combine them into blankets for the dog and cat to use. I know my MinPins love to steal them off the bed and wrap themselves up in them. Then you can say at least you didn't waste the yarn, and if they get to dirty in the wash they go, and if too torn up, just cut them up and let the birds use them for nesting material.

Me too! I am looking forward to grands eventually, but I'm so glad preggers days are behind me!
Risu - I missed your birthday on Friday.

Hope it was a happy one!!
Skand, it was great to hear from you! Hope the sunburn gets better quickly. I've been there & done that enough times. Now, every time I get burnt, I blister & break out in an itchy rash. No fun at all. I agree about the apple cider vinegar. You might smell like pickles for a few days, but it does ease the burn.

to you & the girls!! (Okay, to Jim too. Just don't tell Dennis that I'm hugging hippies!

The acorns won't hurt the chickens but they will make the yolk of their eggs darker. I thought something was wrong with my eggs until I read where acorns will do that. It doesn't change the taste or quality, just the color.

Sick with the flu and preggo isn't fun. I was 8 mo. and came down with the stufff that made me sit on the toliet with the trash can in front of me.

I was huge and felt like I was going to die. Feel for you preggos. I craved junk too. I gained a lot of weight with my first one and got it all off. I was a bit more careful with my son. I only gained half the weight.

I ordered all my seeds back in Jan. I finally got everything except a few rhubarb plants. I'm ready to play in some dirt!

I wish my hubby didn't work nights Karan or I'd come down and help ya! I worked in a greenhouse for 3 years in Centerville. I loved it but the pay wasn't that great. It was fine for the time, I was in college. I couldn't even begin to imagine how many trays of seedlings I have transplanted.

Good luck with your adventure in yarn Tiki! I have been there.

I almost got my picot border on my blankie but I want to make some matching burbies. I will post a pic later today!

This is my nightmare I had last night. It didn't last long because I woke up right away.
I was looking out my back window and saw a huge anaconda in my chicken run.

I absolutely hate snakes! Don't mind rodents but snakes give me the ibbies jibbies. I can't even watch them on T.V. or I get sick to my stomach.
