Baustin, see if you can get a copy of Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. The book has charts and graphs in it for each area of the country telling you when to plant what, and whether from seed or transplant.
The theory behind it is that you take a 4' x 4' section and then divide it into 1' squares. The book tells you how many plants of whatever that you can then plant in the squares. By doing this, he figures that you will tend your garden more, have lower weed problems, and better production from your garden.
Also, if you haven't started a compost bin, then now would be a great time to start one, they can be made from almost anything and if you load it up now, say with the stuff from your coop and runs, by next spring you will ready made compost to add to your garden. With each successive year the compost and other additives you add to your plot you will see increasing yields from your garden.
