I don't see how you will manage with under 150 chickens. How do they know anyway? Send someone out to count the chickens?
Can't you find alternative insurance?

In light of your limitations I feel quite fortunate, I think I have more than 150 right now..... more or less???.It’s the insurance company making assumptions. THere have been quite a few incidents at larger pork and poultry farms in our province recently with animal activist groups breaking and entering, damaging property, setting up hidden cameras...
If it was up to me I would be looking into other insurance options. I’m not even actually looking to have my flocks covered really. I accept that predators are a risk, and illness. My problems arise because the farm I live on isn’t ours... it is my husband’s Father, 2 Aunts, and cousin who actually own the property jointly, inherited from his grandparents. Maybe in 15-20 years I will have some say in what goes on at that level.
I love farming, especially the chickens, but miss having my own property (even though it was suburban) that I could do with basically as I pleased (but NO chickens!). I’m sure there are other options out there, but the Aunt who manages the insurance and the broker she uses have no interest in looking for them. And yes, the Aunt might very well try to count my chickens... if only I had some beehives out here...
I have to say it’s super impressive what everyone else is doing with such limited space. 1/8 acre supporting the chickens and a nursery business? That’s amazing! It annoys me that I have so much room and am being so limited in being able to use it.

I love his behavior... looks like an awesome Roo. Aware of his girls and looking out for threats. My Mr Marans is a lot like that in demeanor. He looks watchful and smart. My Silver Grey Dorking with his half Red Ranger Daughters, 2 videos from this afternoons trail cam session. I really love observing how they act when I am not around. This is one fun toy that serves as a security camera at night.
Up until last century he was the worlds best tasting breed. I never got one of his pure bred sons to live long enough to process. I need to put the trail cam in his sons Pen, he is in with the Pure Bred Dorking females, Although he has a different pattern he has a lot of the same traits as his father. Slightly more aggressive but he gets that from his moms side and slightly taller. I hatched out some chicks from that cross too, not many. I got a variety of colors. I do not put the trail cam in the first brooder due to space issues but when I move them outside in 3 weeks I likely will... unless I break it which is possible because I can't stop using it.I love his behavior... looks like an awesome Roo. What camera are you using? I'd like to set one up in the futureMy Silver Grey Dorking with his half Red Ranger Daughters, 2 videos from this afternoons trail cam session. I really love observing how they act when I am not around. This is one fun toy that serves as a security camera at night.
Out of curiosity, what is the insurance company's policy on other types of fowl, such as ducks? It sounds like they're specifically concerned about chickens and pigs? It’s the insurance company making assumptions.
