Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

My first Cuba chicks.

Only got five out of the first batch of 15 eggs to go in the bator. Seven were not fertile, and three failed to hatch although they were fully developed. My fertility was 100% on the last batch that went into the bator 5 days ago. Now if I can just figure out why those chicks died. I ran the bator dry for the first 18 days, but the air sacks still looked small when I moved them to the hatcher, so I ran it dry as well. Even so, the chicks that died seemed to have too much fluid in the shell when I cracked them open. I just moved nine more eggs to the hatcher today. I hope I have better results on the next batch.

Cubalaya cockerel. Not of my breeding.

And pullet, distantly related. Both still under 1 year old.

It means its not a pure wheaten. If its a cockerel, it will be very hard to tell its different when grown. If a pullet, it will be obvious. I've never had one quite like that, Sometimes the Zook line will throw a female of a very uniform dark brown color, maybe this will be something like that. Possibly it's carrying Db dark brown, possibly Mh Mahogany, or it may be a partridge type, not sure. Maybe partridge eb wheaten Wh cross? Time will tell. Don't worry about it, it could be your best bird ever!!!
