Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Question. There this an eBay seller that is offering hatching eggs. Tracked him down using his eBay name and he is Jerry Coupal and he lives in Riverview, Florida. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about his cubas?
Here are a few pics of some of the ones I got from him today. I would appreciate all thoughts. Should they be yard birds, or do you see anything in them that would make them worth using to start a breeding program? They are a little rough. I believe they were ina small breeding cage, and the tails feathers show a lot of wear. ......stan

Based on the pictures you have posted I don't see any glaring problems, they seem fine. The feather quality will work itself out, don't sweat that. I actually really like the head on the top female. I can't see any reasons to not use them for breeding from the pictures you posted. What is their size like? How old are they? Where did they originate, etc?

Stan got them from the guy in Riverview, FL I was asking about. I was asking about them for Stan. Stan lives close by and I told him about them. The guy only told Stan that he got them from somebody in California but he did not remember the name
I guess he could not sale any cuba eggs on eBay so he decided to sale his breed stock off. I do like the pictures of them. I am very happy Stan got some decent birds right there close by.

Hmm, I don't recall any of mine going to Florida. Then again I don't do the sales either, just sort the keepers out. I probably wouldn't have had any Duckwings for sale. Also depends how old they are, how long they guy had them. The females seem to have the heads of Zook line, which is what my duckwings are. It's possible they came from me, but they look a bit small. They could use a dose of BBRed, to beef them up.

The guy has a lot of breeds and was not very clear on where these came from. First he told me they came from California, then he said he got some from Oklahoma and 'somewhere else'. He says he bought them from breeders when he was living in Ohio and showing other breeds. He said that they are not hatchery stock, but he did not know any of the breeders names. made me a little suspisous. They are on the small side, the biggest cock is just under 5 pounds and the pullets/hens are 2 1/4 to 3. He told me that one of the trios is 1 year old and the other trio is 2, so with some care and conditioning, they may put on some size. He had such a low price on them that I could use the pullets/hens as broodies, or even just yard birds and not lose much. I thought they had decent type, but I don't really know what I'm looking at yet, that's why I was asking for your opinions. They looked to me to have wide, O.K. heads, low tail sets, and a good cushion on the pullets, so I figured they had some decent breeding behind them. Thanks for yur comments, I appreciate them. ..........stan

They are not bad birds and I didn't mean to imply that they were: only their origin.

The trouble with Ideal birds is that when bred together their offspring go in every direction possible. I've never seen Ideal birds produce chicks that are as good as the parents.

I ordered chicks from ideal befor, when I first started. The birds were extremely small. I ordered BBRed and Blue Red and didn't get either. The birds were all golden or silver, most being blue or splashes. They're all gone as of that first summer. That's when we got into contact with Mr Zook. Like I said you may breed BBRed in and improve type. Color you are in for the long run. The red shoulders are a pain IMO.

Got a digital scale yesterday so I thought I would weigh my biggest Ideal Cockerel and see what he weighed. He was hatched on June 13th 2012, so he is a little over seven and a half months old. He weighed 2lb 13.6 ounces. I was wondering how this compared to a normal sized cuba at this age?
