Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

I saw that you all don't usually ship chicks, and I was concerned about shipping eggs, adults or juveniles so far. I have no experience with that. (I did order goose eggs a few years ago and none hatched). If anyone has anything and it would be ok to ship please let me know.

Kaella , congratulations you have chosen a wonderful breed, I have had chickens for many years and the Cubalayas are far and away my favorites. You are right, eggs are very risky but do not be afraid of receiving live birds via the US Mail. I have done it and mine arrived in great shape. They must be shipped Express Next Day and in an approved container. There are some very reputable breeders on this thread, you can't go wrong with any one of them. Best Wishes Bill.

I'm in Louisiana, about 30 minutes east if Baton Rouge. We haven't done showmanship yet, this is her first year. Is it difficult to learn? The parish show was last weekend and her Mille Fleur D'Uccle hen won reserve bantam. It was a very small show, but we were excited. The state show is tomorrow.

I miss louisiana :-(

What age are your 4 H-ers? If they are young, they will learn a lot by watching the older kids. The judges don't expect as much from the 9 year olds as they do from a middle or high school kid. There are some great YouTube videos, done by Louisiana kids, demonstrating quality showmanship. Read carefully all the rules and regulations for your state or county. It will take some practice to get both kid and bird accustomed to the handling routine. Though cubalayas aren't as big as Buckeyes or Delawares, many youngsters have trouble handling large fowl. Let me dig, somewhere I have a good pic of my son training his...

These are from 2012, when my son was 12. The cockerel is cubalaya, just not the best. However he was extremely tame and trainable.

Graham had this rooster so trained he could pose him and the bird would hold. But he messed up and put him back in the cage backwards, so got 2nd at county fair. Thats the breaks!

Thanks so much for the info! My daughter is nine, this is her first year. I think I said previously that state was today, but it was district. I've been calling it that for a week for some reason. There was only one nine year old showmanship kid. We weren't allowed to watch though. We are going to try to see if she can learn it for state next weekend. I'm sure it won't be perfect, but it will be a learning experience. She's ready to go though and wants to learn how. We have watched several YouTube videos now, I'm just not sure how much she will need to know at her age.

Here is a white cockerel coming up. I'm liking his type a lot. The spangle behind him is his sire.
