I found a bag of DE that said it's "pet safe". I can't find any around here that says "food grade" on it. Does "pet safe" imply food grade?

MAKE SURE IT'S FOOD GRADE.

According to the web, it's also modified to be used in something to do with air conditioners (filters I think) and has silica in the NON-FOOD based types. Basically....GLASS. You don't want this in your system or in your chickens system.

Food grade is just plain with no silica in it. Search and read the threads and the web. Also...I found a semi-local supplier in Nashville that sold at 40 dollars for a 50 lb bag. Since I get there alot...it was convenient.

I'm trying it....but have no idea if it's doing anything good for me in the litter. It does seem like the flies have died down some in the stalls.....so maybe it's working.

Yep.... I've got the bad stuff. I'll have to throw it out and keep looking for the food grade.

I paid less than $20 for 50# here in the Seattle area. Bought it at Dells Feed (chain of stores in the NW) and it is food grade. Things are usually expensive in this part of the country, so I'm baffled why it's so much cheaper here that I've heard quoted on this forum. The clerk had no idea what "DE" was, so you may need to use the whole name. It really keeps the manure smell in check (deep litter), even in this heat.

I found mine in New Jersey [Trenton area] for $23 for a 50lb. bag.

If your local feed store doesn't have it, ask if they can order for you with their regular supply order. Often times, they can accommodate and you can save $$.

Don't feel bad, I bought the wrong kind at first, too... before I had chickens and I was just trying to find a natural pesticide for my garden.
