I let the Old Ladies start up in March last year and it didn't go well. 0% hatch from 2 nests. I am not hatching any this year.

Holly-for our weather over here, is March a good time to start?
Do you just quit collecting the eggs or do they start sitting on them and not leaving, so you know?

I do just stop collecting and then they decide to sit. Bcz the weather has been so darn strange lately, if I was going to allow them to sit, I think I might wait until after Easter. That way the weather should *really* be better by then. HTH

ONE EGG today! 1/5, but it's the first egg in months, so I'm happy. Of course it was frozen and cracked by the time I got out there this afternoon, but now I know to look for them earlier! Yay!

Their in a pen now because pond is froze. So maybe when the pond unfreezes and I let them back out, they will lay their eggs around the pond somewhere and sit on them.

That doesn't sound safe they would be and pardon the pun" sitting ducks" for any predators that came around. Best to encourage egg laying in a safe shelter. And hopefully before the pond isn't frozen anymore.
