Well, look at me.. I have not posted my success and finishing comments to this summer-time backyard story.
It all ended August 8, 2010 -- yep.. well over 11-weeks from Start to finish. I really could have butchered them 8-9 range, but it was not convenient for us. And HONESTLY, the biggest issue was getting the kahoonas to do the duty. In short- it took a team to get it done! I had my brother-in law do the killing, and I gladly did the eviscerating. I ended up killing a few myself, and really had no problems- but it was indeed a bit difficult to get the courage to do even those few.
THE CONCLUSION:
-we started with 51, and had a rough beginning losing over 10% as seen in prior posts.
-down now in the early 40's we experienced a horrible dog-slaughter as the neighbors husky jumped into the tractor and killed 20+ - I ended up freezing the ones that were not mauled.
-We butchered right at 22 chickens on August 8 - and filled the freezer to the limit!
-Weights are in the mid 4lb and several in upper 5lb range.
LESSONS LEARNED:
-start with 25 - after the dog-mauling, my life was much easier with 1/2 of the flock... STILL messy poo - but not as much to deal with.
-start your chickens earlier than I did. I will probably start in April next time to avoid the 100-degree days. I think I can control the heat enough when they are fragile.
-buy food in bulk. I think i spent just about $100 in food. Very little food actually for feeding 50+ mouths since I used about 500lbs of brewers grains (Free from brewery). However, I think that just buying bulk food and storing for the duration is an easy method to go for the next batch.
-GROW YOUR FOOD: I actually found great joy in pulling junk from the vegetable garden and feeding my chicks. I think next year we will grow 2x and try to supplement more with garden stuff. I will do research to find a high-yield, easy growing crop that will benefit the chickens.
-shoot ANY dog that walks into your yard.

Nice Bill---woo hoo did you speak to neighbors about their dog??? thats a big loss:-( the 4-5 lb range dressed roos or girls? great job!!!

Good thread, I am working on my first cornish batch right now, 5 weeks old and 3.5 pounds...
Anyone doing another run with them?
