No flaming here. Some areas have good law enforcement, some don't. It just scares me when people say, "Carry a gun out there and wave it around to scare them" not thinking about the consequences if the other party might happens to be armed. Which, these days, is always a possibility.

@bobbi-j... I didn't see anyone in this thread advocating waving a gun around. There's a big difference between letting a potential threat know that you're armed vs. acting like Barney Fife with a gun as you seem to be implying.

@ronikins... + 1 with one exception, concealed carry. The element of surprise can be invaluable when needed and easily discarded at any point.

We don't have dogs, and our place is remote enough that our neighbors probably wouldn't even hear us if anything happened. Also, we frequently hear gun fire (target shooting) in the woods around us as most households around here have at least one gun, so a few shots in our yard wouldn't get anyone's attention.

I keep my pistol handy while in the house and in my CCW holster whenever I go out the door, even if it's just to collect eggs or get the mail. I like to be prepared to deal with any predator, regardless of how many legs they may have.

And for those wondering... I too am well trained (military and professionally), practice regularly, and I'm willing to use it if necessary.

I definitely DO NOT condone walking out waving it around to scare.

Look at this way, what if you walk out to ask them to leave (with no gun) and THEY pull their gun on YOU? You are unarmed! At least follow what BrewedInNh said and do it concealed. I have my CCW and just purchased a Kel-Tec PF9 for easier hip carrying. I'm no hero, but I will defend my home.

Really, everyone should think about carrying some kind of weapon at all times if you live on any amount of acreage in a rural area. Our teacher at our CCW class told a story that makes me think twice about carrying. A lady went to get the mail with her toddler. While walking back home, about a quarter mile from the house, they encounter a rabid raccoon. It immediately goes after the toddler. The mom of course goes to defend the baby and is attacked brutally. She ended up losing a breast and had to have facial reconstruction surgery due to her injuries. She's lucky to be alive.... Now if she'd had a 22 pistol/rifle or even a stun gun or taser, she'd probaby had made it out ok.

I would like to have more specifics on this news story in order to show my husband the report. My husband is anti personal protection (guns) and would accuse me of telling him an urban myth. Please if you have more info - at least local - it would help.

I think you and my husband are related! He comes home, changes clothes, and immediately puts on his holster and pistol. It doesn't come off until bedtime.

ParadiseFoundFarm, I'm sorry. I looked all over for some kind of article but it must have happened a while back.

dainerra has some pretty good links. I read the thread about the wild dog pack here on this board earlier. That's enough for me to go out armed....

Be careful and read your local laws on guns. From what I understand, Illinois is definitely NOT a gun-friendly state.

A pistol does little good if you can't get your hand on it. I wear mine as comfortably as my wallet and cell phone.

In the next town over there have been several attacks by rabid fox. I'd feel awful foolish if I got attacked in my own yard while my pistol was in the house.
