d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Hi Warmheart [love that name] speaking from my experience only, I think the D'Anvers are much friendlier.
They would be a good chioce for a "pet" chicken to spoil.
Your little hen was gorgeous! So sorry for your loss, but you know you gave her special love and care, sometimes thats all you can do.
God bless you for your Warm Heart
Cheryl

I've a few curious newbie questions. Has anyone ever seen a mille fluer over quail pattern before? Or done such a cross? Sadly, we lost our sweet little starving rescued hen who we had for just a week. I believe she was a D'anvers mix? (straight comb, legs cream colored) But, her breast was mille fleur, her back was quail, and the mille fleur spots with black accents were also across her quail-colored back. I miss my sweet girl. Has anyone seen such a pattern combination before?

This is her front view via blurry cell phone pic, sorry... and the other pics shows the quail under the mille fleur...

I just cannot tell you how much I loved this girl. She was clearly a cross, but seemed to have some Belgian D'anvers in her. She was starving when we got her, had an upper respiratory, and we did what we could for a week and she passed. My goodness, she was so loved!

Other question: Are D';anvers quite friendly? (Do they like to be held, tend to be tame?) Are some colors more friendly/easily handled than others?

Thanks for the questions. Our tiny flock is standard-sized, free range in safety, and are all rescues from difficult situations. Our ancient, gentle rooster is an OEG Bantam mix. I'm wishing for a hen to occasionally be able to pick up and spoil a bit. Would a D'anvers be a good fit for our situation? Is a D'uccle friendlier to being held? Which is calmer? Thanks for any thoughts.

that's pretty cool, looks like you had a mottled quail. Very odd indeed. Hate you lost her, but from the pics that's what I'd have to call the color. And yes hen wise, they are the tamest little things you can have. Males not so much, but the girls are sweet hearts

The hens are the sweetest, most lovable things you can imagine. The roosters? Well, let's just say they won't be your best pals.

Penny willl sit on my lap in the coop as long as I let her. I've often left the coop with her in my arms, forgetting that I was holding her. My DH did the same thing last week. She is my Pocket Penny. Can't believe she, Carly and Aimee, the latter two who are currently raising chicks, will turn 2 years old in a few days.

Adding a pic or two for you, first Carly with her little man (not a d'anver, a LF DelaWyanCauna, lol)

Maura, who I think is 21 weeks old, if I'm not mistaken. Cetawin will be taking her to live in KY soon.

Thank you Cheryl, for your thoughtful, kind words and understanding on the loss of my Bea. I really appreciate it! Why yes, I do want one to spoil... how'd ya guess?

Aubrey, a mottled quail, interesting! Color genetics are fascinating, and I've peeked at your site. Very intriguing combinations and varieties there! Thank you for sharing your experience, especially with the temperament of these hens. I appreciate you taking the time to give of your expertise here in how these girls might be to live with. I'm learning much. Oh, and there is the most *darling* mille fleur hen on your D'anvers picture page! I'd post it here to show you the girl I'm swooning over, but I'm unsure if that's allowed here. She's got a super-floofy beard and a gorgeous solid build with such a stunning, spectacular pattern! Her expression makes me melt!

SpeckledHen, Oh. My. Goodness! I am in love with Miss Carly!

Mille fleur is my favorite, and she has such a nice, full beard. Poofy asnd sweet-looking, she herself looks like a flower.

Thanks everyone for your patience with me. I'm still grieving Bea, and I've only a very tiny rescue flock. I've never seen a bantam of any type before Bea, and her sweetness and pleasure at occasionally being held has stolen my heart away. :)

By the way, I know the pic shows her eating a plate of scratch grains, fresh corn, and live mealworms-- but this was just to try to get her appetite back up, we really did have a no-tip cat dish of Nutrena crumbles in her hospital crate! My gosh, I miss her. When a little hen not only allows you to sometimes gently hold her, but actually understands how much you love her, what a tremendous bond is formed. I understand now why people love this breed.

HI!!! I will share some of my pics soon :), but 1st! Does anyone know if they have a nesting preference?

Arvanah, how beautiful! Those are gorgeous birds you have. What rich coloration for the quail color! They seem to glow. I love how sturdy and stocky they look, with poofy beards!

I really want a mille fleur D'anvers,

but I'm unsure how to bring that about. I'd ideally want an adult mille fleur hen that someone didn't want/need anymore, to spoil and love. However, I don't think many owners would have a mille hen they'd be wanting to give up. Hatching eggs isn't what I'd prefer to do, but I suppose that would more ensure that a hen would grow to be friendly/tame. (Friendliness is a priority) Guess I'll keep my eyes open. The right friendly mille fleur girl who needs a new home will hopefully come along,

if it's meant to be.

For now, I'll just go back and enjoy the photos in this thread.
