d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Hey, I've lived out west in both Colorado and Utah (did Utah twice), plus Ohio, thanks to the Air Force. My older son was born in Colorado and my younger son was born in Utah. I've lived in snow. Had 100" the last winter we lived in Utah. Didn't see the yard for five months and the snow ridges on either side of the driveway got higher and higher. I've done my time in snow, believe me. Ohio was the worst of all weather- 25* below zero, plus ice, plus snow. Lived there almost 12 years.

ETA: My dad bought us some rubber stretch on cleats and they work. Used them going to the coops awhile ago. Snow had stopped but it's going again. We're headed to 3". If I wanted snow, I wouldn't live in the south, but I do live at 2000 ft and that is wonderful for the summer night cool down.

I just finished up my last round of watering. It took longer than normal. I opened the barn door and bachelor coop so all the animals could get out for a few. I had to carry Sully the Sultan roo and Mad Max d'Uccle/Silkie roo back to their coop. They got out in the snow and forgot how to walk.

Hey all :) Could you give me some pointers on my adult roosters? Please tell me if you can, what exactly must I do to improve them and what it is I need to improve. Should I cull them and start over with better stock? Or are they okay enough I can build from them? Going to be getting some eggs and birds with my tax return. So need to know what to do! Thank you!! Quail #1 (They do NOT have white on them, that is from the flash, they are super shiny!) Quail #2 - He refused to stand up... stubborn! Same guy, he tried to leave so I snapped a quick one! Porcelain Roo #1 (Big daddy) with his MF wifey! My only Silver roo, I know he has bad color and his comb is too big and not really the right shape. Its NOT a single comb, the pic is just not showing it correctly. But its... big. Porcelain Roo #2 (Sonny)
Let me see if I can help you a little. To me quail one looks the beat type wise by far, the silver second best. The rest don't look very good. See how the quail male has a nice full breast... that's good. Now look at the porcelain.. no shape to it at all. That's not good . You want d'Anver to be plump full bodied birds with a very thick neck. Those others just look to skrawny to me. On the quail male I would like to see his wings held a bit more forward. Almost straight up and down with the leg feathers being almost to the foot basically hiding the leg. The silver male is pretty close. His wing on the quail would be nice. A lot of this is just pose and posture. Pixs can lie just depends on what he was doing when you took it. A walking pic or panicked pic won't be as nice as a calm posed one. The comb on the silver. Yes bit big. I like the texture though just need to be more fitting to the skull.. The backs could be a touch shorter as well. On males you just about want a V shape with the hackles nearly touching the tail area. Same on hens for that matter for what I like. Long flat backs just don't look good to me. The silver yes is very dirty colored . Too much leakage. Bet they come from quail breedings. That can be very very hard to clean up especially if its autosomal red. Both those males though have nice enough type to work with. The porcelain and mille , eh.... would be best to get more. They are very hard to get nice ones in the US though. Always seem skrawny and long backed. Quail has just been around so much longer here that enough breeders have had them and type is usually much better on average. If there's anything else you'd like to know feel free to ask:lol:

Looking over again I noticed wattles too on the quails and silver. That'd be something to work on. That beard should be full enough not to see that. Look at the porcelain. They both are nice and full with no wattle. If you had a pic of them more posed up and not stretched out looking, I might change my mind on them. Though not sq they may be better than the pic shows on them

Those are splash quail. I really like the color but it is not a recognized color. If crossed with regular quail the will give all blue quail offspring which is a recognized color. As far as the quality goes it is not a good picture to judge type by, but I don't see any bad problems with them.
