d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Just let me know if you start getting some. If not, my decision is made for me, which may be for the best.

I adore these little mille fleur hens beyond reason, I have to say! They are so super sweet, but if someone saw Penny jumping up and pecking the top of my calf asking to be picked up, they'd think she was attacking me, LOL. Aimee just flies across the pen to my shoulder if I ignore her. Good thing their pen is covered or I'd have already lost her. Carly isn't quite as needy, but she still likes her cuddles. Yes, we do make pets of them. Well, we don't-this bunch insists! It's funny how the male and female of this breed is so different.

I put LilGuy down in a floor pen with a pair of 6 month old Columbian Wyandottes so he could socialize and dust bathe. He ruled the little floor pen and fed the little pullet Terra. Quiver the roo lived up to his name. LilGuy begs to get out of his cage now every morning to go visit his friends. He no longer attacks my hand when I reach into his cage to get him out nor does he front me when I pick him back up at night to return to his cage. Smart little rooster.

Sounds like he knows who butters his bread, eh, Kathryn? I'm going to return Rufus and Rusty to the bantam coop at roost time tonight. At least, the girls have had a reprieve and maybe the pecking order being shaken up will adjust their attitudes a teensy bit (well, I can dream, can't I?).

Thanks for the tip. I'll try the oil. I bought these two at Crossroads and their feather condition was already a tad ratty. I have them in a clean pen to themselves, so they haven't gotten any worse since I brought them home. We entered this show because the organizers are trying to start one in a town close to us and I definitely want to support it.

I'm sure I will be building show cages this year for their chicks.

sounds like your feed should be good. Good clean and dry pens are a must for excellent feather condition. One thing we do with longtails is take a little mineral oil on a soft cloth and apply it to the long feathers they cant reach. If yours a dry and ruff looking, this will help clean them up a good bit. Dont over do it, just a slight oiling is all they need. Do it til they look better. If they are totally damaged, broken, and ratty, a molt is all that will help though. If you plan to show a lot. It is crucial to take the birds you plan to use , pen them separate, preferably off the ground and in good cages. This helps a ton, also thick shavings for the bedding to keep poop off them and such.

It can be a chore to raise show birds due to all the babying they take to keep them in tip top perfect condition.... we all know they arent the cleanest critters on Earth

sounds good, yep they most likely were in a grow out pen then, that's usually what messes up the feathers, so they'll get better with time. Good luck with it all, and do support those local shows... I wish some one would start one here

Aubrey-

Why dont you try and make it up to Dalton on the 4th of Feb?

Jeff Brandon and I was talking about it thought we would shoot you an invite, have some good talks over some food and birds.

Is there a show on Feb 4th in Dalton? Hmm, Aubrey, if you decide to go to Dalton then or to the one in March, let me know. I may be able to pop over there to meet you in person. JJ said he'd take Rusty if I could make it to the March show; I think a friend of his is judging then. Not sure I can go to both of them-Dalton is about an hour from me and gasoline is rising every week, it seems.

I think there is going to be one in March also.

I heard this one was going to have a few folks showing up also, so it should be a good showing of d'Anvers

wouldnt mind trying.. problem is my schedule... need to just take off and go for it I guess. Would love to go there and Newnan, just wish there was one on the south end of the state, both of them are still 4-5 hours from me... I know that's not much to some, seeing how many come from Ohio and New England to them... Gotta bite the bullet one day...just scared I'll get hooked I think. But have some birds in d'anver and phoenix that should do pretty well I think. Plus would get to finally meet everyone... that would be my biggest selling point. Will see what I can do.. Most likely would have to be March shows, think the 4th is next weekend, gotta go to see a friend up there then

I think there will be a few coming down from ohio...

Last year Tom and Tim came and Jeff said that Romer was coming.

I am guess we will have a big showing..........sadly my birds are looking a bit rough right now........even with them being in show pens!
