Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Which photo of your roo depicts his correct coloring? #1 or #2?

The first picture is the coloring of him. Guess the second picture might have been his brother.

Yeah, the second photo is a rooster with WAY too straw colored of hackles/saddle. The first photo is a pretty decent guy though.

Conformationally they look the same is why I'd ask the same question.

I had 6 roosters. Yep, they were all beautiful and the one I kept had the darkest colors. They ended up in my freezer since I couldn't sell them or even give them away.

This is what they looked like. Funny buggers too......

This one always cracks me up. They are all hanging out at the pop out door just before I close it. They were so goofy.

I would have kept them but they were starting to fight and you can't have that. These were the only pictures I could fine of all of them together.

Okay.......I give..........these are going into the bator with some Dellie eggs that are coming from Kathy. Hopefully, I will be able to add a couple more before hers arrive. I am going to be even more selective with eggs from both my Wellie pen and my Marans pen this year, even if that means only very few at a time.

One of the Marans eggs you see here @ 1 o'clock is from my project pen of blues and splashes.
12 o'clock and center are Wellie eggs, the blue/green eggs are from a first gen OE crossed with one of my Wellie roosters.

Thanks CP! I forgot to mention that not one of these eggs are from a Black Copper. There is an egg from a solid light blue not showing any copper, the other 2 are from blue coppers.

The darkest eggs do come from Black Coppers, but there are Blue and Blue Coppers out there that lay some very nice eggs. However, Blues and Splash tend to naturally lay a lighter egg, I am working on egg color with my Blue Coppers and they are lighter than my Black Copper eggs. I think I just lucked out and got a few keepers, hoping for more today and tomorrow.

eta: A few days ago I wasn't happy with them.....these gals have only just started laying maybe 3 weeks ago so I think they may have just been working out some kinks in the spray dept. I hope they keep it up.

Here are some eggs from some splash and blue gals that didn't make the grade for breeding. They are currently in a project pen and I am working on backcrossing these birds for egg color only.

Here they are in full sun, it just doesn't do them any justice at all does it?

Just for fun, here are some of my Welsummer eggs.
