Das Hühnerhaus

Don't get it too tight. My first was kinda loosey goosey, made the second one tighter and regretted it wood swelled a bit and it sticks, gotta get out there and rework it soon.

Got the "Chunnel over the River Kwai" done today! Still need to find material for the pop door.

Girls were so curious that they used it right away. Need to figure out what we're going to put in the run. Right now, we're undecided between sand and pine shavings. The pergola will eventually have a corrugated plastic roof, but I'm still leaning towards shallow coarse sand just to keep it from getting too mudy.

Also poured a concrete pad at the entry to the extended run. It's thick/high, but we plan to put sand or something (e.g. river rock, mulch, who knows yet) around the coop as a part of the landscaping. Eleven 80 lb bags of concrete.

Can't wait to clean up the mess... :)

I also think your chunnel looks good - quite a clever way of putting it together. It always makes me laugh though when I see the huge effort peeps have gone to with their coop & run and in the pics, the chickens are OUTSIDE.

We do the same. : )

I bet you are sick of all the exposed earth. It will be worth it & a lot less work maintaining it in the long run. My run is roofed & tall enough for me to walk in - built for my comfort while doing chores, not the chickens.

We have been using a plain old wal-mart plastic cutting board for 3 yrs now and it works just fine. I used aluminum channel on the sides and bottom for the cutting board to side in. So we don,t have any binding when wet or dirty.
