Congrats!
Of the two eggs that I set on 6/12, both have hatched (the second one just this morning). They were from my own hens. One has an umbilicus that looks like it didn't finish sucking in the yolk. (hope that fixes itself)
Of the 16 eggs I bought from a woman in CA, only one hatched. I accidently killed the second one that would have hatched because I thought the egg was already a dud on day 22. It was that "murder" that led me to this thread.
I'm sad that the success rate was so low for the purchased eggs, but not surprised. They were mailed across the country, and are Araucana eggs which have a low success rate.
At least I have one true Araucana, I hope its a hen to go with my one Araucana rooster. All my others are Ameraucana/Araucana mixes.
Anyway, I digress.
Using my harshly earned chick-murder experience, I CAREFULLY pipped the remaining 4 unhatched eggs. I got pretty good at it, too. I was able to break away part of the shell without rupturing the membrane. (Only one exploded. The other 3 had embryos that died at different stages, the worst one was fully formed but did not absorb the yolk.) I knew that if I saw any blood or a pulse inside the membrane, I could put the egg back in the incubator. Too bad I didn't get that chance, or I'd be able to tell you the success rate on the method.
