Day 30

Yeah, I was hoping that too. I will go try to candle the peeping one. I'm worried. Next time I'm pretty sure I'm just gonna let the mama sit and just stay out of it and be pleased if anything happens. This is so nerve wracking!

I candled it and there was absolutely no movement... she had broken through the air pocket. I am so afraid that I killed her!

I went ahead and chipped at the shell because there was no movement at all, no sound no nothing and she was filling up the egg. There still was no movement as I chipped at the egg and when I had gotten to her... nothing... BUT her yolk sac looks like it was still intact!

Please tell me I didn't kill her... that she was already gone....

The only bright side to this is that the other egg that had tapping has broken the shell and is busy at work. But no peeping from that one.

I don't think you killed her we probably won't ever know why, my duck that just hatched one lone duckling 2 weeks ago. the only other one , had the same thing happen except it managed to pip through the shell then died. It's sad and I'm sorry.. Lets just hope that if it couldn't make it out then it was meant to be and might have had something wrong with it which would have been even more heartbreaking. Okay so the one that has broken the shell is still peeping right?

The one that is cracking the shell just started peeping. I've heard it tapping for the last 24 hours, but no peeping, but when I just went out to check on it, there was more of the shell broken, though I did not see a hole. I peeped when I was holding it and it started peeping back at me, for the first time. Is it a problem that the shell is being cracked but without an actual hole? Thank you so much for all of your help and walking me through this. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.!

Mama is sitting tight right? what kind of crack are you seeing hairline or bigger pieces dropping off? also don't take it out anymore than you have too because she is keeping the humidity just right and when we take the egg out from under her the humidity drops which can cause the membrane to dry out. you did the right thing by checking and listening, now you just have to be patient and wait.. Keep posting though because it does help the time go by.

GAH! Now, I'm worried that I've hurt another one. sigh... Nothing has dropped off, but it is beginning to look like, well, you know when you are breaking a boiled egg, you hit it and the shell cracks, but doesn't drop off until you begin pulling it off. Is that how it is supposed to look? There is a space about as big as a dime like that. It was the size of a pencil eraser earlier.

I have to be honest and say I didn't look at the eggs again so i don't know what they looked like when they were going through their zipping stage, I listened to the egg and heard peeping put it right back under mama and didn't look again until the next day and it had hatched. I don't think it could be cracking the shell if it wasn't already internally pipped. So just leave her be now and check again in the morning.. Sounds like everything is going good.

Thanks! I will do that. I did look at some videos of hatching duck eggs and saw similar cracks, so that made me feel better
