Daytime predators?

Coyotes are in every state in the Union and there are heavy populations in Virginia. Google Coyote attacks in NJ. They have been attacking childern up there. Coyotes are thought to only hunt at night but they can hunt anytime of the day..especially if they are feeding pups.

Wow, thanks. I have never heard of coyotes around here, but I live in an area where people don't want to live too near the wildlife. They want to spray and kill anything inconvenient. I can accept that there are predators around that I can't control, so I figure it's my job to protect my hens as well as I can.

most here in town do not realize what is in their neighborhood friends of mine who live in south boston and near bristol are covered in preds (coyotes, bobcat and both type foxes) most who live here in tidewater do no realize there are black bear in their back yard

we do a pretty fair job of controlling them here good luck with your birds

Same here... lost 3 of my favorites and more besides in the last month... they will come right up to the yard if they have cover... soy beans here.
In the past , I have lost whole families (moms with babies) to, I think, a mom coyote who was teaching her pups to hunt. What better in the coyote's eyes... baby chicks for her pups... and Mom hen for her.

There are probably as many if not more coyotes east of the Mississippi than west and they're bigger animals too.

I have coyotes in Western Virginia and they stroll around in the day time here. I have a big ole blue tick that takes care of them he is very loud and active. He sleeps in the garage with the door cracked so if he smells something he is on it like white on rice. He dosn't mess with the chickens though I worked with him a lot at first to see them as something he dosn't want to mess with. I do know that if you kill one there will just be another one moving in. Best to make it as unhospitable as possible for them.

Very true and the further north you go on the east coast the bigger they get. Three of them killed a 19 year old girl in a park in Canada a year or so ago. She was an up and coming folk singer and seemed to have a promising career ahead of her. Other hikers came to her rescue but it was too late.

They are a pain in the rear here in North Georgia but at least we don't have them the size of what you guys have to deal with up north. They are getting bolder in our area but not to the point of attacking people yet...especially a young woman.

Do a Google search on the attack if you would like to find out more details. It's tragic, but I think people in the North East should be very aware of.

You know the "professional" wildlife people in this state told us many years ago now that there weren't any coyote in this state, funny that there is now no closed season on them, and we can now hunt them at night during certain months. I forgot what they said when someone dropped a few carcasses and sent the pictures to the papers ;-) .
