diatomaceous earth - did I buy right kind?

Hmmm, the company mine came from is in AR, wonder if it is the same you are waiting on??? It in Nitron Industries. I sent them an email, maybe that will help get them in gear

I just on a whim asked about it at my local feed store and was floored when they actually knew what I was talking about, I had trouble pronouncing it and tried to sound it out for the guy and he says, Oh your talking about, Diatomaceous Earth,

. They have 50# bags for around $20, and the garden shop down the street has 5# & 10# bags as well. Hopefully you can find some soon.

The company we are waiting on is Morningside Organics, if I remember right. I'm not faulting them at all by any means, they are just a new co-op and expanding their routes bit by bit, and aren't delivering to NW Florida yet. We need a large co-op (for the store) that provides a wide variety of organic foods, personal products, animal feeds, whatever. We have a lot of customers who used to buy in bulk.

That reminds me, I should call Joyce (our store's egg lady) and see if she ever found another source for DE. She used to order it from us when we ordered from Ozark (the one that shut down).

Funny, when I called one of the feed stores today, he kept repeating what I said trying to understand me, because he didn't know what DE was. I said "diatomaceous earth" and he said "vaccinations?" LOL it was funny. I think I would

if I found someone nearby who knew what I was talking about!

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely call some more plant nurseries tomorrow. I'm glad I didn't have this much trouble finding my feed though!

Hey GoodEgg, if it looks like Crestview would be the best (cheapest) route, then let me know and I can make the run over there to pick it up, and we can split it up among us.

What a small world!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw Herbs and Things when we were driving back down Palafox. I had never seen it before but was wondering what was in there. (Usually I just drive but I was really looking for new feed stores today!!) If the kiddos weren't already going crazy in the car on the "longest trip to Barnes" ever:lol:....I would have stopped to see what kind of store it was.

I love Ever'man (on Garden St.) and I am in there a few times a month. I wonder if they could get it?...I never thought about natural food stores but that makes absolute sense!! I will go next week and ask them.

I live in East Hill (by Jays Bakery and City Grocery...if I say these shops then people usually know the area). I will definitely come into your work!! How fun!! I love meeting people who live in the area and have similar interests.

Thanks, Cracker. I need to get the quote back on the $21 bag for shipping ... I'm thinking that will PROBABLY be cheapest, since we'd be paying $20 more for the one in Crestview plus some gas money.

I guess there are 3 of us then? I think I saw where Miltonchix has all that she needs for now. It will be cheaper than ordering by the pound that way, for sure.

I'll let you all know when I know the cost of shipping, and we can decide.

Thanks for offering to go if we decide to get the one from Crestview. I think you're already a bit closer, so that will help, though we'll all have to meet.

Hopefully we will have our DE soon, one way or another!

Hey Lisa,

I am usually there on Fridays and Saturdays, if you want to stop in. It really IS a small world!

Ever'mans might be able to get it. I don't know how they handle special orders.

Herbs and Things carries more vitamins, supplements, herbs, and things like that than Ever'mans. They have more grocery items than we do. And we are phasing out most of our groceries, because people want so many different things, and we have to buy in bulk of course, and with it being all natural, there isn't much of a shelf life. Plus groceries are low-markup, so they really cost us a lot in the long run to carry them, when they go out of date. We are only going to keep the things that are more popular. (A lot of stuff is 25% off btw, until we sell out if it.)

We're going to carry more personal care products in the future, and we have a lot of teas. We can always special order, if it's something we can get. (Unfortunately, DE is not right now.)

But sure, stop in if you like. I'd love to meet you! We'll hopefully all be getting together soon to split up our DE anyway.

Talk to you later!

Dear Good Egg,

I hope you didn't miss the reference to "dirtworks.net" that was on the first page of this thread. The 1 lb. bag of food grade DE is only $11.99 INCLUDING shipping. My wee cute little chick-a-dees brought fleas home to the farm, the little flyers, so for the first time in their lives our dogs are having to deal with fleas because I was late on the (expensive) Frontline. I plan on trying the DE on the non-chicken species as well.

I stopped by Mannings this morning to pick up some Blue Kote. While I was there I asked if they ever carried any DE. The man said that they don't have any but because they have had so many calls and inquiries about it lately that they have decided that they are going to start stocking it. I didn't say anything else, I just smiled.

I looked at the dirtworks site and then I did a search of ebay sellers and found better deals there such as 5lbs - $18 w/ship. And 10lbs - $28 w/ship. And at dirtworks they were out of stock on the 5 lb bag, with a back order time of at least three weeks.
