diatomaceous earth - did I buy right kind?

It depends what kind of ant your dealing with, but the little ants are best combatted with the baits that have a sweet tasting liquid or gel. It will kill them. http://www.rrsi.com/index.php?act=products.view&pid=528

The
bifenthrin or cypermethrin type products have good residual and so will kill them if they come back later. Indoors, out of the weather, they can keep working for close to a year. Outdoors, bifenthrin usually works for about three months, give or take, depending on weather conditions and the Cyper can be even longer.
FYI Cypermethrin is also one of the most common termiticide products which is sprayed under a slab during construction and will last several years under those conditions. The only insect I have encountered that is pretty resistant to them is spiders. They require more spraying or even better changing chemistries to something like lambda cyhalothrin. A common brand of that chemistry is called Pestabs

but it is also sold at the big boxes under a variety of different brands. Always look at the ingredients, not just if it is sold as "Raid" or "Spectracide" or some such trade name.

Thanks, RoyalHills. I'll keep that in mind.

We have used Grants (which I read has arsenic) ... pretty much no effect, even after a month. Sometimes I thought they were working, but they'd be back within hours. I put 3 of them in my closet, right where the ants were ... they crawled in and out, and didn't ever leave the clothes in the closet, but have lived for weeks there.

The exterminator sprayed -- don't know what -- and that hasn't helped either. If anything there are more than before.

We also used professional MaxForce. That seemed to help a bit, but we still have ants. And the cat is very interested in it, so I can't leave it out.

I'll try the DE next, since it has arrived. I'll definitely keep your suggestions in mind if it doesn't get rid of them. I know I can buy the Terro locally because I had considered it last month.

I've seen some disagreement on the board regarding types of pesticides. Honestly, I work at a natural products store, and I don't like to use pesticides, and generally I never have the need. I do buy a can of insecticide and keep on hand, because sometimes I can't get to one of those giant roach-like bugs that get in the house here in Florida, and I really don't like them running around alive since they can and will fly and land on you, and that freaks me out too much. (And my daughter refuses to sleep if there is one in the house.)

But for the most part, peppermint oil seems to keep most everything away. It may also be some other oils, as we tend to use a lot of them (especially lavender). But when you can no longer dress in clothes without inspecting them for 30 minutes to make sure you get all the ants off, and can no longer leave your groceries in the cupboard, the time has come to do something. It's just that I've tried several things so far, and nothing is working! I'll definitely keep the ones you mentioned in mind, thanks for the info.

You know, something else I noticed, was that when the chickens were inside and creating SOOOO much dust, I did have palmetto bugs (those giant roaches) coming inside and dying on their own, coated with chicken dust. I'm thinking the dust may have clogged the spiracles? But I'm not willing to have the inside of the house coated with chicken dust, and it didn't work on the ants anyway.

Thanks again!

DE is here! They delivered it without knocking ...

If we want to split it 3 ways (that's easiest?) I can just scoop out equal amounts into 3 containers. I don't have a way to weigh it.

We need to figure out how to get in touch with each other. If either (or both) of you wants to come to the store (Herbs & Things) I'm working for the next two days. Otherwise let's figure out something convenient for everyone.

I live in Cantonment, about 2 or 3 miles past the mill.

Let me know, and if you want, email me and I'll send you my phone number. (SO glad to have a phone again!)

Trish...I emailed you!!

Thanks Lisa,

I will get back with you later. I really shouldn't be on here right now (gotta finish taking care of chickens ducks and hurry to work). I guess I am addicted, LOL

But I will reply to your email asap.

Thanks!

Hi Trish,
I was wondering if you got my email? I emailed you through the "email" link under your name....I hope that went through.

If not let me know. I'm still interested in splitting the DE with you.
Thanks!!
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I'm not sure if I got your email or not. I did get one, and I replied yesterday.

I'll resend, if I can. Don't worry, I still have it for you. We'll get caught up with each other somehow!

Ummm ... here's a copy of the email, in case some reason you aren't getting it. I have had a lot of trouble lately with my yahoo email accounts, so just in case ... I'll copy and paste here. I don't think I sent any personal info.

Here's the email ...
Sorry it took me so long to reply. I work on Friday and Saturday, and take care of a lot of business between then and Monday too. This is my first time back online when I wasn't working the whole time.

I don't mind having you come here to the house (Cracker came last week ... actually he's a he, and I thought I was talking to a woman ... I guess I just assume people I meet online are women unless they say otherwise). But I'm homeschooling my daughter, and it's sometimes harder to really plan our days. If you don't mind waiting and you wanted to visit the store anyway, I can just have it for you there on Friday or Saturday, if that's ok and if it would save you a trip to Cantonment (not sure where you live?). But if it works better for you to come here, I don't mind, and I'm sure we can work out a time. (I live a couple miles past the papermill.)

My fibers ... I sell fibers for scrapbooking online. I have lots of different kinds (probably around 900) of novelty fibers and yarns, that I sell in assortments in 1 yard lengths. I would love to learn to do something else with them, but I never learned to knit or crochet or anything. I'm kind of toying with the idea of a wall art using fibers of different types, since I have so many available, and when I can find some time to play with it, I think I will put something together. I look at embroidery books for ideas, but it doesn't translate well to fibers, so I think I'm on my own for designs. Actually, your mention of rug hooking gives me an idea ...

But it's just a dream at this point really. Mostly the fibers are a business (which takes almost all the fun out of it!).

Let me know what works best for you, and we'll figure out when and where. Cracker took about 15 pounds, so we have about 35 to divide between us. If you want half of that, that's fine, and if you want less, I can probably find a home for any I have left over easily. People come to the store looking for it from time to time. Just let me know!

Talk to you soon,
trish

Hey ya'll, since we are on the suject of DE, I have a small coop and 7 hens. Would you recommend getting 50lbs or a smaller amount. How much do you use and does a little go a long way, I've never used it before, I've only recently gotten into the chicken craze.
