DE *is said to work to kill small external parasites, such as mites and fleas, due to the sharp particles from shells of dead diatoms, a protist that is a type of algae, that it is composed of. However, they are ineffective when wet, therefore, in theory, would not work inside the body. Some people still swear by it, and my mother appears to have had some success with it, but it cannot be repeated in formal experiments. It's best to use a commercial dewormer if your chickens are showing symptoms of worms, just to be safe. It won't hurt your chickens if they eat DE, though, so you can still use it if you want to try it as a preventative measure!
Diatomaceous earth is great for them to dust in, however. My rabbits and chickens both love it!
