Did you know that chickens can learn tricks??

Silkies~Polishes :

Does anybody know of some other tricks to teach your chickens? I wonder if you could teach them to hop on your arm

One of the posters on this thread taught her chicken to fly up onto her hand. Check out the Youtube video HERE.

Now if you REALLY want to be TOTALLY impressed, look up "chicken agility" when you're on youtube. Amazing stuff!

Here's a list of the tricks I have taught my chickens.

My chickens can:

Come when called

Crow on Command

Jump for treats

Do an on the ground spin for treats

Play Dead

Ride on my shoulder and arm

Be transferred from the perch to my hand

Jump into my lap from the ground when I sit in a chair

And are Harness Trained ( I once took my OEGB roo, Macho Man through an obstacle course for goats at the State Fair.)

My Puffles will even ride in my car with me in the passenger seat and go for walks.

Macho man does a bit of agility. I once went through an entire obstacle course with him on his harness.

During the course we had to jump over a hay bale shortways, run through a maze of livestock pannels, carry a bucket from end of the ring to the other while leading our animals, weave around three cones in a specific pattern, jump over the haybale long ways, and then touch the gate.

He did all of this with me without hesitation.

These are great pictures. I had a hen named Henny Penny also at one time. she was actually neighborhood chicken. Thanks for sharing. Chickens are just my joy. I have always wanted them and finally have a place and husband got them for us.

Holy cow that's me! Thank you for making me feel blessed.

Truth be told, I never trained the chickens. they all know their names, and they wait to hear their name before they fly up like that. The only way I figured into their plans was how I NOTICED what they were trying to do. They use the name to arrange the order in which they each do their treat time. Chickens are extremely persnickety about law and order; to them, pecking order reigns supreme, there is always a desire to do tasks with the least squabbling/pecking. Each of them pretends they don't even know about me and the treat, but call them by name and they come running and perching up on me.

But I will say that Esther is the most delightful percher on my hand. She must have the best vision and the best coordination. The rest of them land upon the treat and wait for me to transfer them onto my arm from there.

but monkey see, monkey do, they all try to get their time eye to eye with me and then their snack. Some of them don't want the snack, it's just treat time and they want to be talked to.

So funny. Mine do come at names. Because of allergies I could not work with them to do other stuff, but maybe my kids will do if I show them this stuff. They trained the dogs.

I have taught my chickens to:

Play tether ball!

Hop from step stool to top of ladder (4 ft.) to top of another ladder (6 ft.) on command.

Go for rides on my shoulder

Fly into top story coop door (approx. 8 ft. from ground) on command.

Come when called by name

Go on walks (with and without harness!)

Tolerate being picked up (by strangers and me)

Jump for treats

Say "Please" (by standing on my foot lol)

Stop "biting" (pecking really hard and penetrating skin, it hurts rly bad)

Stop pooping in front of my patio door (yuck!)

Tolerate being petted (by strangers and me)

And...(hardest of them all)...

Lay in their nesting boxes where they're supposed to.

Most of these are just simple behavior things, not real tricks, but can you believe I did all this with a clicker and a handful of grapes???? It's possible and fun!
